Number the Stars takes place in Denmark, in 1943 during World War 2. Annmarie has a friend, Ellen, who is Jewish and is trying to hide form the Nazi's. They are hunting down all of the Jewish people and taking them to a camp. One night, Annmarie wanted Ellen to sleep at her home because it was just to keep her safe while her parents are escaping to Sweden. When everyone was in bed, some Nazi's came knocking hard on their door. When Annmarie heard them, she told Ellen, who was sleeping with her, that she had to take off her Star of David necklace so that they wouldn't see that she is Jewish. They couldn't unclip the necklace, so Annmarie had to pull the necklace apart. When Annmarie's dad opened the door, the Nazi's came rushing into their house and looking around for Jews. While they were looking around, Ellen had to pretend to be part of Annmarie's family. After they had looked around, they were questioning them about Ellen. Annmarie's mom told them that she is their other daughter and showed them a picture of her when she was younger. Who is really Annmarie's older sister who was killed in a car accident. Then, the Nazi's left and Ellen was safe. This novel is based on when German soldiers invaded Denmark and were stealing Jews to a camp. And how Danish people are helping their friends that are Jewish to escape safely where there are no German soldiers around.
