Our group gave Groff's book a 4 out of 5 stars. We agreed it was quite beautifully written and interesting as a story even though Shakespeare leaves at least some of us cold. Personally, I found the grimness of even the happy parts sort of draining, though I also found much of the book quite powerful and have even been known to quote some of its sentiments spontaneously.
I wish I had been at the meeting. I didn't like the book at all and would have liked to hear the discussion. I did read it all because it did have a storyline but I just didn't like what was going on in the book. I didn't feel connected to anyone in the book, they all seemed like plastic people to me.Jannice
We missed you! Yeah, I was a little surprised that everyone seemed pretty ok with the book. I may have been the least happy with it at the meeting. Mathilde simply scared me, though I also found her sympathetic and fascinating.
Jannice - I liked it well enough, thought it was provocative but wouldn't give it a "must read". I would say it's an interesting read. Totally get what you're saying about not feeling connected, more like outside looking in.
