With the January poll about to finish, I think it would be a good time to start thinking about nominations for February, usual rules apply.
Rules
1. One book per person and the nominator must lead the discussion
2. Must have 5,000 ratings or less
3. Forgotten Classics must be 50 years or older (cut off 1967)
4. Lesser Known books must be 10 years or older (cut off 2007)

I will nominate A Wreath of Roses by Elizabeth Taylor, another book that is already on my to-read shelf and has a mere 263 ratings.

message 3: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Lesser Known - Halitor the Hero by Rebecca M. Douglass, written especially for 'tweens but I've been wanting to read it since it came out.

Forgotten Classic - again, A Wonder Book and Tanglewood Tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne, seriously, y'all, Hawthorne is so clever and still relevant in the stories for adults that I've read; I really want an excuse to read his children's stories.

message 4: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 3 comments I would like to nominate Mary Reilly by Valerie Martin, published 1990 with 1941 ratings (avg rating of 3.63). Inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's Jekyll and Hyde, the story is from the perspective of Jekyll's housemaid.

Thanks Cheryl and Stephanie. Cheryl - we can only accept one nomination (I can't remember why we created the distinction between classics and lesser known books but in practice it doesn't mean anything)...

message 6: by Kerri (new)

Kerri Does anybody second books in this group? Or since there are so few nominations does it not matter? (Sorry, I never have a book to nominate, but I am always interested in what other people suggest!) Just a curiosity question.

No. All valid nominations go to the poll...

message 8: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Ok I'll choose the classic, then, as it can be found on Project Gutenberg (at least in the two components) and the newer book would likely be a purchase for everyone.

message 9: by Carol (new)

Carol (carolfromnc) I nominate The Restraint of Beasts by Magnus Mills, from Scotland. 1998 Man Booker Prize Nominee. Only 2,328 ratings. 3.91 avarage rating. 214 pages. Humor of the occasionally dark variety. 33rd on The Guardian's list of 1000 Novels Everyone Should Read.

Sorry - the poll for this round is long overdue, but I have just created one here, and it will remain open until January 10th.

The Restraint of Beasts has won the poll. There were only 3 votes, and two of those were from the nominators, which suggests that we need to do something to generate more interest in the group - any ideas?

message 12: by Carol (new)

Carol (carolfromnc) Cordelia and carissa, I'm very interested in Restraint of Beasts but don't want to buy it and prepare to lead a discussion unless I have at least one likely reading partner. Please confirm here or via PM whether you want to plan to read this novel, starting Feb 1, or punt. (Understandably, of course, sometimes things happen. This isn't intended to constitute a blood oath, lol.)

I might be interested if I can get hold of a copy...

Wonderful.

message 15: by Carol (new)

Carol (carolfromnc) I'm pulling the trigger on buying it, notwithstanding the Pynchon blurb promoting it (striking fear in my heart. Must look away).

Yes. I'm planning on reading it. I have reserved it from the library.
