Here are your August 2018 Mini Challenges!

RULES

** Books DO NOT all have to be mysteries. You can use any genres.

** A book can only be used once for this challenge, but can be used for other challenges (Seasonal, World Trip, Ultimate, etc.).

** You DO NOT have to choose books in advance, and can change your mind at any time if you do.

** Do as many as you are able and have fun!

1. August is Water Quality Month, August 4 is U.S. Coast Guard Day, and August 7 is National Lighthouse Day: Read a book set near water or that features a lighthouse. (To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf, The Lighthouse by PD James, Lighthouse Road by Debbie Macomber, The Light Between Oceans by ML Stedman, The Light Keeper’s Legacy by Kathleen Ernst, Books by the Bay series by Ellery Adams, The Big Kitty by Claire Donnaly, Hot Fudge Frame-Up by Christine DeSmet, Ill-Gotten Panes by Jennifer McAndrews, This Old Homicide or Deck the Hallways by Kate Carlisle, Clammed Up by Barbara Ross…)

4. August 19 is Aviation Day: Read a book featuring some sort of aircraft on the cover (toy planes and hot air balloons count), or in which someone flies. (Note: Agatha Christie’s “Death in the Air/Clouds” occurs on an airplane, and Harry Potter, Mary Poppins and Peter Pan would count as they are people who fly.)

5. August 26 is National Dog Day: Read a book featuring a dog on the cover or as part of the story.

I might be able to get the first four categories in, but I seldom read anything with a dog on the cover. I do, however, read books that frequently have a dog in the story. (I may have to substitute). Gonna have to do a little digging for a plate of cookies on a cover.

I hate cover categories, because it forces me to dig through my bookshelves checking covers! Not an easy feat, even with shelves organized, when I have over 6k physical books on shelves (2 rows high, 3 rows deep in paperbacks.) Yes, I can look at the cover here on Goodreads, but I don't always see the edition cover I own, so it would only work part of the time.

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) They're more like small coffeecakes or quickbreads or biscuits (American biscuits, not British) than cookies.

Patrizia, I knew them beacause they are typical of English tea, and I've gone to an English tea at a hotel in Madrid. For me, they are like shortbread, bollos in Spanish . Like a brioche but more dense.

Patrizia wrote: "According to you, are these pastries or cookies?
The Secret, Book and Scone Society by Ellery Adams"

They are scones, and I'm going with the dictionary definition that a scone is biscuit-like cake (American version of biscuit, which is not a cookie).

As for the aircraft category, it also says "or a book in which someone flies."

message 35: by Patrizia (new)

Patrizia | 335 comments Thank you for the explanation, Heather. To complicate everything there is the fact that the Italian translation of cookies is biscotti...

As for the other task, I found a book in which the MC and other characters move from one country to another and to do so they have to use a plane, so I should be fine.
