As usual, I have problems understanding one of the foreseen tasks ... One of these covers can be considered "gaudy"? According to my dictionary "gaudy" could be translated as colored ...
Patrizia, I would choose more "volgare, vistoso, pacchiano, accesso"... wordreference is giving me those words, more than colored.
Ok, thank you. I have a mini-dictionary... In reality it told me "vivace" that, in relation to a cover, can be understood as very colorful ...:-(
In fact I did not understand why in the same task the cover could be "gaudy" and "ugly" ... If gaudy means "vivace, colorato", it's the opposite of ugly!Ok, I'm going to hunt for the right cover.

Patrizia, I am a cover lover and usually pick my covers based on how much the cover attracts me. Ugly covers to me are ones that are not eye-catching. As Heather said, this is very subjective. I chose a black cover with part of a woman's face with fly away hair. To me that is an ugly cover. I might find something else as I continue to search.

Gaudy: extravagantly bright or showy, typically so as to be tasteless; garish, tawdry; not pleasing to the eye.
Does that help?
