This thread is where you can chat about all things PIFM, ask questions and once books have been read, review your selected reads. A complete free for all.

PLEASE NOTE:

PIFM is meant to be FUN and not to be taken seriously. I would appreciate it if all participants just chilled and not get worked up about voting, who votes, who doesn't, etc. Please bear in mind that some will just want to vote, many don't come on everyday and most of us have time constraints. I just want a relaxed approach to it all and for you all to just enjoy the process! I'd really appreciate your courtesy in this matter. Many thanks.

Perri | -50 comments Gosh I've been having a hard time posting on Good Reads, it keeps bogging down with traffic. Reading more and posting a new year's resolution for people?

I agree unfortunatelly I still have no idea what I'll read in February so I don't even try to think about March yet *grins*

That's what I thought too, though after I wasn't able to access my read shelf for two days I contacted the GR service and learned they have another major bug in the programming and it's making our lives difficult.

Vicki Willis Great review Perri. It sounds interesting. I don't think I have read a book from that perspective culturally.

It reminded me of one of Amy Tan's books.

I have really liked all the books by Barclay I've read. I am definitely going to look for this one.

That does look good. I added it. So it is a 2 book series?

The Truth Factory (Smokey Barrett, #5) by Cody McFadyen The Truth Factory won for me this month. I really liked the first 4 books and I have had this one for a while now, so I am glad it won.

On here it appears so but on Fantastic Fiction it's listed as a stand alone novel. I have No Safe House too on kindle so I may read it after.

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments Can't wait to hear your thoughts Perri! It was a little off for me, but a lot of people love it. I do want to read the second one for some reason though... maybe because it is being turned into a TV show

message 18: by Kirsten (new)

@Mandy I didn't know it was going to be a show. I guess I will have to read the second one as well.

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments I have read almost half of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg .

My stack for March is sitting next to me asking to be listed. I am tempted.

message 21: by Agnieszka (new)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1462 comments Anne,
I noticed you have a tie between Dance with the Enemy and Lost Girls. Do you want to read both or only one of them? In case you'll read Dance with the Enemy - are you interested in a buddy read?

My books are pretty closed this time:
3 votes: Dance with the Enemy (The Enemy, #1) by Rob Sinclair I like this new cover much more, than my original one :-)
2 votes: Night Passage (Jesse Stone series) by Robert B. Parker Keep the Ghost by Scott Kelly & Wrong Turn, Right Direction (The Bourbon Street Boys, #4) by Elle Casey

I hope to read all of them this month :-)

message 22: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale I am closing my votes. Whatever's got the most votes.

message 23: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Second and third place books came from the three books that each had 1 vote.

Have you already started Dance with the Enemy?

Yes, I'd be interested in a buddy read (as long as you're not too far through it already...)
Let me know.

Ann Girdharry (anngirdharry) | 313 comments I'd like to put one of David Baldacci's on my March list.
Anyone here a fan of his?

I'm wondering if any of you have a recommendation/favourite?
thanks :)

I waited on you so I didn't start it yet. When do you want to start? I could start either now or by middle of next week again since I'm starting two buddy reads Monday and would like to take enough time to read and comment on the book - but I'm not sure if I can do it with three books at one time :-)
any time - one of my book buddies got the flu so I'm flexible.

There're some books I love and others I just can't stand. My favorite one is Absolute Power - a political thriller (and was made into a movie with Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman). Personally I think his political thrillers are way better than the 'plain' mystery driven (King & Maxwell). I still not started his assassin series Will Robie (book 1: The Innocent) but heard good stuff about this one as well and would like to see how I like those.

message 32: by Amber (last edited Feb 10, 2018 12:19PM) (new)

Amber Martingale Ok, I gotta admit that there's one particular image in The Time of the Wolf I will NOT forget: Hereward rising from a blood filled lake looking like a minion of Lucifer in the process... .

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK! I don't scare easily, or so I used to think but this scene scared me as much as both that scene in the 1953 version of The War of the Worlds when the Martian hand comes down on Sylvia's shoulder or the face melting Nazis of Raiders still scare the bejesus out of me.

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments I found a quote from Edmund Wilson to be pretty profound. "No two persons ever read the same book". I had to think about this for a few minutes before I could agree. I have been reading Dear Fahrenheit 451 Love and Heartbreak in the Stacks A Librarian's Love Letters and Breakup Notes to the Books in Her Life by Annie Spence which happens to include this quote.

And I agree with the quote.

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1462 comments Just for your information - I just got an interesting recommendation in another group and though you could love it (plus it's available in a GR-giveaway): The Charm of Revenge The Charm of Revenge by Tom Secret by Tom Secret

Six years ago, Brad and Lola Fairweather ran through the hospital corridors searching for a doctor to save their baby, Daisy, but they ran into cops. They gunned Brad, dragged him away like a slab of meat, while Daisy died in her mother’s arms.

Now they have another daughter, Lilly. She’s four and their son, Jack, is eleven. They’re the reason Brad and Lola keep going. But when a bogus tax demand arrives, it triggers a chain of events that forces the Fairweather family to take the law into their own hands, with devastating consequences. As events unfold, they discover their names are on a sinister government list, and their enemy wants to finish what he started, all those years ago.

With the dead bodies piling up, Detective LT. Donatello hunts for the vigilante killer the press are calling "a hero," but finds himself caught in a complex web of organized crime, kidnapping and murder, with the evidence pointing to just one person, and that's bad news, for him!

Ann Girdharry (anngirdharry) | 313 comments hi Agnieszka,

I'm ready to start next week for the Dance with the Enemy buddy read - sounds like a great idea!

How do you want to do it? And where shall we discuss the book - on this thread?

For me it was the ending of the 1970s remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers with Donald Sutherland making that noise. *shudders*

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1462 comments Dana (Ca),

looks like you have a clear winner for March.
I heard so much great stuff about Before We Were Yours and my vote won't change anything so I decided to go for this one - it was so lonely ;-)

message 42: by Agnieszka (new)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1462 comments Long time it looked like I'll have not clear winner (6 books all with one vote) so I'm glad I have now one with 3 and one with 2 votes. I'll read these and will see how many of the other I'll manage to read as well :-)

If no more votes come my books for March will be Sidetracked by Brandilyn Collins & Remember Me by Lara Van Hulzen

message 43: by Dana (new)

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments Thanks! I have too, so I think I will still try to squeeze it in :)

message 44: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis I started my Feb read, The Truth Factory (Smokey Barrett, #5) by Cody McFadyen The Truth Factory.
I had read the others in the series a long time ago and was really looking forward to this one, but either it has changed or my preferences have changed. It isn't as good as I remember the rest of the series.
I am only 20% in though, so maybe it gets better.

I too started this series years ago and plan to read the next one this year, I wonder if I will feel the same as you.

Mandy (penn_y_lane) | 547 comments Looks like I have clear winner with 6 votes Still Missing which will be my first Chevy Stevens book (don't know why it's taken me so long to get around to them)

message 47: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis I am reading my first Chevy Stephens right now
Never Let You Go by Chevy Stevens
On audible.
It is great. I was thinking the same thing about what took so long!

I wonder if all her books though are the same and that I will get bored if I read too many of them.

message 48: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I'm over halfway through my Audible copy of The Hidden Staircase, the 2nd Nancy Drew. Nancy was one of my first literary loves, right after Dr Seuss.

Audible does a great job on these. The first few are narrated by the great Laura Linney (who played Abigail Adams in the HBO miniseries). They also have incidental music and are really well done.

What amazes me is how I still enjoy them after all these years. I first read them in grade school (1970s) and thought they were written in the 1950s. Imagine my surprise in finding out they were written in the 1930s!!

message 49: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Originally written in the 1930s and rewritten n the 1950s, actually.

message 50: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Well, I'm only on #2 ... it was written in the 1930s. If anyone is interested in the history, there's a great "biography" of Nancy Drew out there:

Girl Sleuth: Nancy Drew and the Women Who Created Her by Melanie Rehak
