Here we can nominate books for this particular genre*. I hope this'll make our selection process smoother, in a sense that you can now see in one thread every book nominated for this particular genre. I won't mention books that have already won the selection, but if they come up, it's easy to share the link to these books' discussion boards.

The month in the title of the thread will (dis)appear accordingly to the nominations time schedule, but the thread itself will remain for further discussion about these books in general.

*A discussion with Betsy made me wonder if we should simply open a thread for each genre, in which we could nominate books each time the genre comes up, and talk about these genre books in general. So here's the first one. Let's see how that works!

I wouldn't mind reading Neverwhere. However, I notice here one grave omission - there's no The Children of Men. I was sure we have already nominated it somewhere! We actually didn't?? Well now it is :)

We are running out of time - if you are willing to nominate something, please do so until tomorrow.

The poll is up (miserable as I am, I cannot decide which one I wish to read, so I'll let you decide):

Book of February 2018

A slight majority decided we are to read Neverwhere this month. Children of Men will have to wait, hopefully not for long now that we have put it on our map :)

Time for new noms, everyone!

I'll offer Children of Men again, but would like to add The City & The City to the pile. I heard it is interesting.

Any other suggestions?

message 9: by Jenny (new)

Jenny a.k.a....Jenny from the block | 2 comments I also nominate cats cradle:

This way everyone could have a choice on some more

Is it only available via BritBox?

message 11: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 22 comments I thought Emergence sounded good. Is anyone interested in animal stories like The Incredible Journey? Sorry, I am on my phone and can"t see if its been done. Also, do t.v. series count? I just started Shogun. It's 1000 plus pages though so we would have to do it for more than a month.

Those are great sf books, but I couldn't find a film or TV adaptation based on them. Do you know any? Cat's Cradle TV show is in development. Is there a TV show based on Emergence, I just can't find it.

Oh shoot. I didn't consider that this is a brit TV show. A friend of mine saw it via his cable network. I have no idea, I'll have to take a look myself on how to track it.

We haven't done The Incredible Journey yet, would be lovely! It may be better though to nominate it next month when we'll tackle classics again. This month we are supposed to choose fantasy or sf novels :) Shogun's cool, also a classic. I heard there's a new TV show in production.

message 15: by NancyJ (last edited Feb 18, 2019 01:16PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) I just read The Shape of Water, which is a fantasy with a weird (but oddly wonderful) romance between a woman and a creature (identified as Poseidan at one point). I liked the book more than the movie -which was an Academy Award winner. I like to know what is going on in the character's heads. The book includes a lot of action scenes that weren't in the movie. It has a hint of mythology and destiny. The book is set in the 1960's and has some interesting scenes for female, black and gay characters.

I would also like to read Wizard of Oz and Stardust some day, as I loved the movies. I would also be interested in Neverwhere.

I think every serious movie fan should see 2001 Space Odyssey, and Solaris at least once (but I'm not ready to watch them again myself).

20000 leagues under the sea has a leader that is offensive by today's standards (fascist, etc.)

Great suggestions! I had no idea The Shape of Water had a book version! We haven't read neither Wizard of Oz nor Stardust, equally great picks.

Neverwhere is already on our bookshelf, and I heartily recommend it, check this thread: Neverwhere - Book and TV

2001 Space Odyssey, Solaris, and 20000 Leagues, all fine classics. Since you are not in the mood for those three, do you agree I put in the poll only the first three suggestions?

I would like to nominate Leviathan Wakes, Good Omens, and Mortal Engines.

Lore (delhilainthecabin) | 165 comments Oh yes! Leviathan Wakes I am just finishing S04 of the Expanse and Blood of Elves the novel behind The Witcher Netflix series (such a great S01). Also, loved the Host, great novel and good movie :P

Have you read A Discovery of Witches ? The first season was amazingly accurate to the book Oh! And The Passage which sadly I have to say the series is not nearly as good as the novel but the novel is quite epic in its proportions...

Can you tell this is one of my favourite genres? lol

message 26: by Michaela (new)

Michaela I read Discovery of Witches, because everyone recommended it some years ago, but I found it a bit boring. Perhaps the film/series is better.

message 27: by Lore (new)

Lore (delhilainthecabin) | 165 comments Yes, it is much more action driven and lots of info gets packed into each episode, cutting down a bit on the academic stuff and summing it up pretty nicely. Also, the internal monologues are often summarized in one smoldering vamp/witch look :P

Lore (delhilainthecabin) | 165 comments I'd like to nominate A Discovery of Witches I actually just finished re-reading it for the second time because I wanted to have all my facts straight for the Season 2 of the series, so I'd love to comment on it :P I would also love to get an excuse to read Blood of Elves

Thank you for your nominations! I have already watched The Witcher and read Blood of Elves, and I have Discovery of Witches on my to-read list all thanks to your suggestions :)

I've actually read the first two collections of The Witcher stories, and liked them, although I got the impression Sapkowski seems quite a bit misogynistic toward women. I am not sure if that's a right word to put it... Well, I'll figure out what I mean once we get that book on our bookshelf ;)

message 37: by Lore (new)

Lore (delhilainthecabin) | 165 comments Oh, really? I didn't find the game overly prejudiced against women but maybe the game designers updated it a bit. I haven't read any of the books though, only played the games and watched the Netflix series. I heard his books are built upon medieval and folk history of his country, so he has mostly European characters and a very patriarchal take on societal interactions. You have really piqued my interest now!

Unrelated but the Shadow and Bone series is about to hit Netflix. So we might want to add Shadow and Bone to the mix! As we speak, I have just purchased it. lol

I didn't play the game, my brother did and liked it very much. I watched the show first and then read the books (the first two). The stories are really good, I just had to get past the way women were portrayed. It's hard to say to yourself get a grip, it is just a book!

Cool sugestions Timothy, thanks! Let me just pass a few notes about them:
Fellowship of the Ring - I feel we would not do any service to the LotR series by reading only the first book - we should read them all (coincidentally, I am right now reading it again, my New Year's Eve Resolution :)
Call of Cthulhu & The King in Yellow - these would be better as Quick Reads, I'll add them there
Starship Troopers, Ender's Game & Battlefield Earth - we didn't read them, will be added to the poll
1984 - this was our book of March 2016
Bird Box - this was our spotlighted read of Feb 2019
Parable of the Sower & Out of the Silent Planet - these do not have adaptations, at least I didn't find any yet.

In short, I'll add these four books to the poll: The Lord of the Rings, Starship Troopers, Ender's Game & Battlefield Earth. Nice selection :)

Lore (delhilainthecabin) | 165 comments The Eye of the World I want to put this one out there, it's the book the Wheel of Time is based on. Since the series just finished, it might be of interest.

The Book of Life Season number three of a discovery of witches comes out on Jan 8th, so reading the final book of this trilogy after we have seen it might be nice too.

I'll add The Eye of the World to the poll.

For DoW, we didn't read the first two books, so maybe we should add the whole series, The All Souls Complete Trilogy. I know it is a way too much reading for one month, but considering we can read books from our bookshelf whenever it suits us, we can take as much time as we need for reading this.

As for LotR mentioned above, I'll make a project of it, so it'll be omitted in the poll.
