What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

First, this is not the book Finn Mac Cool by Morgan Llywelyn. This is a book about Finn the Fair One growing up and training and becoming clan chief. I believe his Father (previous chief) had been killed by his grandparents (who were Fairy royalty, I think?) when he was a baby, and he had to be hidden away in the forest to survive. He's raised and trained and catches a fish that gives him knowledge and all that good stuff, and then he has to win some clan tournament to become chief. I think he has to overcome some treachery from his grandparents or a witch to win. There's also a second book in the series involving the Dagda and Morrigan where they're all fighting the Firbolg(?), and Finn has to go into the Fairy Kingdom to search for a weapon to defeat the Firbolg leader. Finn also has a couple pet hounds that play a prominent role. At one point in the Fairy Kingdom, they're in a desert and find a spring and he lets the hounds drink the last of the water before he can have any. I think I read the paperbacks in the early to mid 90s, and I don't know if they were new then.
