Have you read too many articles lately? Been watching cable news? Is it getting you down? Is your world feeling too real?

We've been thinking a lot about this at the library, and we've come up with some ideas. Mostly they're book ideas, because we're librarians. The steps can be performed in any order, but Step 1 is a really good first step.

Step 1: Stop reading the comments on current event posts. We know this is hard, but it's good for you. You can do it!

Step 2: Find a way to get out of your head, because sometimes the internet rage lingers even after you've turned off your screen. Maybe some yoga (we have DVDs for that!), or a walk, or a BOOK.

Step 3: Consider what you need from a book. Do you need some positivity, or maybe some redirection? Maybe you need to avoid the 21st century and time-travel back a few centuries? Or do you need to just leave planet Earth entirely and go to Mars? Do you want total fantasy escapism with magic and dragons, or maybe even just a lighter celebrity memoir?

Step 4: Consider what you don't need from a book. Do you have any sensitivities you need to let your librarian know about when they're helping you find a book? Maybe you need to avoid murder mysteries, or maybe the #MeToo movement has been really difficult and you want to avoid gender/assault issues.

Step 5: Have you already read the book you need? If you're a re-reader, going back to a favorite book can be like literary comfort food. Consider this permission to re-read Harry Potter for the 45th time, or whatever book or series makes you happy.

Step 6: Talk to a librarian. Seriously, librarians are good at this. They can help you through every step, even Step 1! We can troubleshoot any machine into the void. It's fun for us.

Come see us at any of our branches, or comment here on Goodreads, or email us (our website is here) - we would love to help you!
