Ayshe | 3084 comments Individual short stories only published in anthologies should not have separate records added.

I know this has been advised several times already, but I don't like to leave thread without answer :)

CraftyChara | 55 comments I only created these topics because the other books in the anthology have their own page(s).

message 5: by Hugo (new)

Hugo (hugo_nebula) | 742 comments I've just checked further, and this User has shelved three 'books' (also short stories from this anthology - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7...) which have already been added to the GR database, and which don't appear to be valid entries either.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

Some of them have been shelved quite a few times by other Users, and I'm too new a Librarian to have the confidence to delete them - can anyone advise?

Cara - I see what you're saying, but none of those already-listed stories seem to be legitimate entries. As far as I can tell - by researching a little this morning, and being a fan of most of those writers - none of them have been published separately, which means none of them warrant a page of their own. In fact, if or when a more experienced Librarian reads my post above, they may be removed.

Sandra | 31654 comments Hugo, the ones with less than 5 adds can be merged into the anthology. The ones with many, many adds get added to the super librarian thread to be merged.

Of course to do both of those jobs, you need to add the primary author to the short stories.

They all need to be merged.

Sorry, my inexperience is showing again.

All three of those writers are listed in the Stories anthology, and their links go to their profiles. Both Stories and these stray entries appear in the list of the works. But when I try to Combine Editions, the book Stories does not appear in the list. What am I doing wrong?

Check the tip on the combine page: You can only combine books with the same primary author. If a book has multiple authors make sure the primary author is consistent in each edition so they can be combined.

Hugo (hugo_nebula) | 742 comments A-ha! By 'primary author', you mean the editor, Gaiman?

message 11: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 31654 comments If he is listed first - yes. You just have to make all books have the same primary author to combine or to merge. As Ayshe said :)

message 12: by Empress (new)

Empress (the_empress) Primary author simply refers to the positioning of the author name (which for anthologies is usually the editor).

For you to see all editions in the same combine (author) page the first (primary) author name should be identical to the works that you want to combine. Since those stories will be merged into the main work it does not matter if the primary author is the actual short story author so you can change it to the editor (yes Gaiman) and request the merge into the super thread.

Does that make any more sense?

message 13: by Hugo (new)

Hugo (hugo_nebula) | 742 comments That makes complete sense. It was a literal A-ha! moment.

Thanks for the help, both of you.

Cara, is that a book? Please see https://www.goodreads.com/help/librar...
These are the acceptable cases for short stories records:
Shorts are retained in some cases. Shorts that belong are those that are:
* Published separately
* Published online as a specified short story (i.e. not a 'bonus')
* Complete flash fiction

Empress (the_empress) Hi Cara,

items that are not allowed in the database are deleted by a process called merging. The user's shelving and ratings are transferred from the short story into the anthology by the merging process.

This means if you have shelved this edition, once the merge is complete this book will be on your shelves (instead of the short story which will no longer be on GR, unfortunately).

And your previous 13 requests of that kind should have made the policy clearer to you.
