Sandra | 336 comments I read this small novella back in about 2001 or 2002. I believe it is a family saga that takes place in the south, in a beach community, probably Mobile Bay, Alabama. The book takes place in the 20th century.

All I really remember is that there is a jubilee tide that takes place in the book. This means that all kinds of sea creatures wash up on the beach, like crabs and lobsters. In one scene, all the people near the beach run down after the tide with buckets and collect the creatures. And there are cries of "Jubilee! Jubilee!" up and down the beach.

I don't think it is "Eveningland" by Michael Knight.
I wish I had more info. Can anyone help?

Sandra --
Don't give up hope. We've found books after months and even years after it was first posted.
You can bump your book every month or so. This keeps your book towards the top of the Unsolved Folder where more people are likely to see you query. It's better than being on page 27.

Sandra | 336 comments Thank you, Kate. I'll keep trying.

Sandra, what's the tone - gritty realism, racial tensions, nostalgic, sad, funny, romantic, mystery, etc.?

Can you tell us more about the family and their challenges?

Sandra | 336 comments Not gritty realism, no racial tensions, not a mystery.

I don't remember much about it the family, I'm sorry. I probably have a snowball in H's chance of finding it.

Maybe nostalgic and sad?

Bryn (brynplusplus) | 186 comments Apparently this is a real phenomena that happens in Mobile Bay, Alabama, so that might help with the search.

Bryn (brynplusplus) | 186 comments Perhaps something from Mobile Bay Tales?

Jubilee! is a (non-fiction?) picture book, so probably not...

Eveningland: Stories seems to have a story called Jubilee in it, and other reviews mention Mobile Bay.

Sandra, did you rule out the suggestions @9?

Of those suggestions, it is most likely to be "Eveningland." I'll need to get a copy of the book to be sure, though. So that's a "maybe" on #9.

I added some plot details to the topic header, so your book might be recognized from the header alone. Feel free to update it by clicking the small "edit" link after the header. This only works on the full Desktop website – not the Mobile website or app.

Did you rule out Eveningland: Stories by Michael Knight?

I'm so sorry--I did get "Eveningland" and it's not the book I've been looking for.

Thank you, Lilly. I've been very lucky in this group--I've found books I never thought I'd see again.

Jaclyn Hogan | 34 comments This sounds like This One and Magic Life by Anne George. It begins with a jubilee tide that a woman hears right before her death. The rest of the book is about family coming to Mobile, AL for the woman's funeral, along with flashbacks to the woman's life.

Jaclyn, that's it! I recognized the cover even before I began reading it on amazon. Thank you very much!

Great! Glad you found your book, Sandra. Here's the link for Jaclyn's find - This One and Magic Life: A Novel of a Southern Family by Anne Carroll George.

Jaclyn Hogan | 34 comments Oh, I read it years ago. I was bored and scanning through posts to see if I recognized any of the books that people were looking for.
