The Ship of the Dead (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, #3) by Rick Riordan

Magnus Chase, a once-homeless teen, is a resident of the Hotel Valhalla and one of Odin's chosen warriors. As the son of Frey, the god of summer, fertility, and health, Magnus isn't naturally inclined to fighting. But he has strong and steadfast friends, including Hearthstone the elf, Blitzen the dwarf, and Samirah the Valkyrie, and together they have achieved brave deeds, such as defeating Fenris Wolf and battling giants for Thor's hammer, Mjolnir. Now Magnus and his crew must sail to the farthest borders of Jotunheim and Niflheim in pursuit of Asgard's greatest threat. Will they succeed in their perilous journey, or is Ragnarok lurking on the horizon?

I've already started this (audible again) and just discovered that part of the book is set in York, where I live!

Part loving it, because it's describing parts of York which definitely helps with imagery.
Part hating it, because Riordan has totally got the pronunciation of the River Ouse wrong. He had this whole funny part about Ouse rhyming with moose, loose etc. When actually it's pronounced like ooze. Really bloody annoying!

Janina (sylarana) | 692 comments I can totally see how that would be annoying.
It's usually fun to get local descriptions in books (or have movie set locally), but you'd think if he really focused a joke or sth on it, he'd at least make sure the joke is not on him ;)

I don't think I'll join in for this one. I'm crossing my fingers for a non-Rick-Riordan book next year!

I completely understand that, Lynn. I recently read (listened to) a book that was set around Haverhill, Massachusetts. The narrator kept pronouncing it Have-er-hill and no one from that area would ever do that. It’s Hay-vrill. It annoyed me the whole time.

Diane | 69 comments I am also sitting this one out. I have never read a Riordan book and I am curious so I will be looking in on this thread.

Finished this a few days ago now but hadn't written anything because I don't really have anything new to say.

I once again listened to the audible and thought it was done very well. Once again, it was your typical Riordan book, very formulaic with quest after quest (which can become a bit tedious).

However it was a fun and entertaining read, with some many laugh out loud moments and great characters.

Normally I like to read a series like I have done with this one, one book after another. However I think that if I pick up any more Riordan books I need to remember to have a gap between each series book the next time. Otherwise I will probably find myself 'quested' out which would be a shame.

I can understand that, Lynn. I feel like I would need a break between the books too.
