Things started to pick up for me in this section. I'm most interested in the scars. It's really interesting how they can absorb craft and seemingly redirect it.

I'm guessing his father sacrificed someone for them? Was it his mother? He didn't go into much detail.

The confrontation between him and Mel at the end of the section was a bummer. I guess now they'll be at odds for the rest of the book?

Suzanne | 1582 comments I'm being super slow with this book - sorry! But....I just finished this section.

I didn't catch that his father sacrificed someone for the scars, but it sure sounded painful/traumatic to get them. And they seem quite powerful.

I like Caleb's worship - of lady luck who appears/exists only during the game :)

I feel like actually seeing the gods suffering at the bottom of the lake has got to have a big impact on the rest of the story. We'll see I guess.... I'm kind of wondering if Caleb is going to gravitate more to his father's point of view.

The human sacrifice was just a guess on my part. He was very vague about what happened for him to get them I think.

However throughout the book so far he's made a lot of reference to his father's religion dealing in human sacrifice.

Suzanne | 1582 comments Yeah. I liked the comparison of the religious human sacrifices, where the victims are respected and treated well (up to the sacrifice anyway) with the daily human sacrifices as poor people struggle to eke out an existence.

Yeah. I'm not sure which way I'd prefer. Both systems sound terrible.

I'm sure the latter is allegory for the way things works now though.

Suzanne | 1582 comments Lol yeah I'm sure it is.

I'm missing the gargoyles but.... I WILL make it through this book - eventually =)
