Our book for April 2018 is Dear Martin by Nic Stone.

This contemporary fiction has been compared to The Hate U Give, winner of the 2017 Goodreads Choice Awards Debut Author and Young Adult Fiction. This incredibly slim book packs a big punch, and has already been nominated for an award this year! What are you expecting from Dear Martin?

Kristen | 166 comments I have yet to read this book or The Hate U Give. It's one of those books that I thought I would eventually read at some point, but I wasn't exactly seeking it out. I honestly can't say whether I would've been able to read this before the end of the year if it hadn't been chosen as a book club book.

Books like this one, which talk about such sensitive and controversial topics, make me a tad nervous, but I also think that they're books that need to be read. With this book making a name for itself everywhere, I totally have unrealistically high expectations for it. That usually doesn't work out well for me, but we'll see.

Christine | 142 comments I read this book in December and really enjoyed it. I actually finished it in a day, which I rarely do. The premise is similar to The Hate U Give, but sadly Dear Martin did not receive as much hype. I am glad we are reading it in book club, and that it received an award nomination.

Do you think it didn't get as much hype because The Hate U Give had already come out and become so popular? Like, maybe people figured that they'd already read something similar and didn't want to give this one a chance?

Aside from that, I'll also admit that sometimes I'm a little iffy about books as short as this one (it barely even breaks the 200-page mark) mostly because I like super well-developed characters and worlds, and that's hard to do in slim books.

Kimberly (whatkreads) I read this one back in Nov 2017 and really enjoyed it. Justyce was a great lead character.
