Story (storyheart) That's a challenging one. There are some authors I'd say I love--Sarah Waters for example--but I've really only loved 3 of her books and more or less liked the others. What ratings are you including in your list? 3 stars and up? Based on that (and leaving out authors of series) mine are:

Margaret Atwood
Margaret Drabble
Kate Atkinson
Hilary Mantel
early Fay Weldon (but not the ones she's written in the last 15 years).
Mary Wesley
Rose Tremain
Muriel Spark
Ali Smith
Robertson Davie
Ruth Ozeki
George Orwell
Michael Ondaatje
Helen Humphreys
Nick Hornby
Timothy Findley
A.S Byatt

Thanks for asking this...I had fun looking through my shelves and also noticed that I get taken in by the hype over some novelists and have read all their books but not enjoyed them. I'll be more aware of that in the future. (Peter Carey fell into this category for me.)

I only included 4 and 5 stars. Peter Carey, as you might remember is an extremely irritating author to me. However when I enjoy a whole book, its a gift.

I urge you to give Alex Miller a try. So many varied, well researched subjects. Spoilt for choice. LOVED The Passage of Love, but if you are interested in OZ , Journey to the Stone Country, might interest you, more.

I remember, decades ago , Fay Weldon was my ' life coach'.

Wallace Stegner should also be on my list.Crossing to Safety is one of my all time favourites.

She made an awesome life coach back in the day. She-devils forever!

Did Alex Miller write PURE? In any case, I'll see which of his my library has.

Found I had read but not reviewd one of Stegner's books, so thats why it wasn't on the list. Very few are in EBOOK format, sadly.

Pure is by Andrew Miller.

I also remember Fay Weldon saying words to the effect that we (us women) shouldn't bother with self help books but trust the novelists to solve our problems (or sum such)... especially her!!
