my fave of all the 4 novels!

I love the atmosphere, but I think it suffers from the same problem in three of the four novels - the absence of Holmes. On the plus side, I think the peripheral characters - Laura Lyons, Frankland, Dr. Mortimer - are very well drawn.
I don't think there has ever been a really persuasive film version, probably because it's a struggle to compensate for Holmes' long absence from the text. But in the '72 version, it's fun to see William Shatner as "George Stapleton."

I have never seen the 72 version, sounds like something I must look for :D
