What really happened?!

When I finished this book, I was speechless. But after I went and read the reviews of other readers who finished it, I was really disappointed.. reason being that I interpreted it WAY differently...(???)

I interpreted the ending of this book to really be a definition of how easily brainwashed Mary is. I still believe Mary is innocent and Mama accidentally killed the baby.... and now that Mary is taking action to get all the wrongs righted... she realizes that she wishes she would have just kept her mouth shut than bring up all this old news and keep going to overcome seemingly impossible boundaries with lawyers, the media, the relationship with her Mama, etc.

I'm seeing reviews about how readers are so shaken up over the twist... angry about it, even, and I'm sitting here like....WHY!!?? what did you miss?! I'm confused!!!

I want to believe that, too. It sort of matches what the psychologist was saying, that she was taking that motherly role. Otherwise, like WHOAH unreliable narrator, right?
