How did he do it?

Everytime I think about this series I end up thinking that, despite the obvious talent and hard work involved, Erikson must have had a lot of luck.

I say this because despite the talent and work, a ten big fat book series based on oblique world building in a fantasy genre seems like a hard sell. There can't be that many publishers would take a punt on such a thing, especially from a previously unknown (especially in the genre) author.

How did he do it?

Take a quick look at the Wikipedia article, but it looks like it took 8y before it went to print.
When Bantam took a look at his draft it must have really struck a chord with someone, so much in fact that he was paid a seriously large fee to do 9 more volumes.

Here are two quick snippets from wikipedia:

"When the script did not sell, Erikson turned the script into a novel and struggled to publish it until Transworld(Bantam) signed a deal."

"It was then developed into a movie script entitled Gardens of the Moon. When this was not successful in finding interest, the two writers agreed to each write a series set in their shared world. Steven Erikson wrote Gardens of the Moon as a novel in the period 1991-92 but it was not published until 1999." and "When he sold Gardens of the Moon, he agreed to a contract for an additional nine volumes in the series."
