Did you know that Theatre Calgary's production of The Secret Garden features Lucian-River Mirage Chauhan playing Colin Craven. Lucian-River is the youngest of the cast at only 8 years old but displays wit and a performance far beyond his years. Get tickets here: https://www.theatrecalgary.com/2017-1...
As we approach the ending of this novel let's discuss how stage adaptations can change the way we see the characters. 1. Is it sometimes implied in films or stage versions of The Secret Garden that Colin's uncle, Dr. Craven and even Mrs. Medlock are conspiring to keep Colin sick to obtain the Craven castle for themselves. Even in Theatre Calgary's musical version, it is up to the audience to determine if that is the case. How do you think that would change the plot points of the novel? What about the difference in characters?
Mary, Colin and Dickon are the youngest members in the novel and each could be argued as the most important character. 2. We see the world through Mary's eyes, but what if we were reading through Colin's? Dickon's? Do the experiences change? Does the tone of the book alter? What else? Who do you feel is the most important character and why?
Looking forward to our final discussion next week!
