This connection is more thematic. Kiss Me Kate is based on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, which can be read as a story about control of difficult women. Dietland explores the idea of dieting and beauty fads being a form of control that society puts (mainly) on women, then calls for social change (though the change in the book is quite radical, in line with Naomi Alderman's The Power). Hairspray is also, at heart, a play about social change and embracing who you are. This book fits in with both plays. It was also a very fun read!
