The main theme of this book is Fight for what's right, never give up, even when you know the outcome. This is the theme because, in the beginning, Morris (one of Ivan's life-long friends) made Ivan make a promise, to never join the army. But, Ivan knew that he had to help his country and to make his father proud so when he found out that one of his other friends (Rudi) was going to be enlisted Ivan knew he was ready.
