I had forgotten how much I disliked Vladek, Art's dad. Not only for his first "relationship" and the way he ended it, but lots of things. The way he supported Anja seemed very sweet, but only on the surface. I think he was more in love with her father's money than with her.

I forgot about not really liking Art either! Not only was he an ass to his dad, but he was rude to Mala.

I have to applaud Spiegelman's honesty in portraying himself and his father as they were (are) despite making them fit the stereotypical molds. His father is a penny pinching ass and may have been so before the Holocaust, and not because of it, but that does not excuse the atrocity.

Because these aren’t “characters” but real life people this was all the more relatable.

Indeed! Good point - perhaps I should change this thread's name when it is non-fiction!

I know people in life that are real "characters"! so I think it's ok. ;-)

No need to change it, just personally found it easier to relate to everyone knowing they are/were real!
