I am pretty sure she could not. Although the fact that he would happily accept a blonde child without any questions beggared belief:)
I agree. She would have been considered untouchable, particularly in the Italian culture and that’s so sad. And her rejection of her own daughter was made even more inexplicable considering her own situation.
I do not know much about Italian culture in early 20th century. I think the husband may have turned away from his wife if she told him (after they landed, so he didn't try to kill all those rapists). What a sad predicament.
