OK – so June is not quite mid-winter, but any excuse to escape into my favourite collection of fairy tales - Grimms' Fairy Tales.
Grimms' Fairy Tales was first published as Children's and Household Tales in Germany on 20 December 1812 by Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm. The first edition contained 86 stories, but by the seventh edition, in 1857, there were 211 unique fairy tales. While the brothers were at university they became very interested in German law, history, and folklore. Wilhelm became very interested in German literature and started collecting books. whilst Jacob decided to quit studying law and spend his full efforts on German literature. They also began to collecting folk tales, both written and oral in order to record the history German literary culture.
So I have picked out 12 of my favourite stories to challenge you with – you can read as many as 9, or as few as 3, to complete June’s challenge – reading a book for each one you spend time with and, of course, including Australian authors in your choices.
And for extra homework – Grab a copy of the Grimms Fairy Tales and look up the short stories I’ve used for the challenge and read them – not part of the challenge but just because they deserve to be read
3 Stories = 3 Books (1 must be by an Australian author)
6 Stories = 6 Books (2 must be by Australian authors)
9 Stories = 9 Books (3 must be by Australian authors)
DON'T FORGET
1. Our guidelines HERE
2. Please include pictures of the book covers especially when the task requires something to be on the cover - for example if you pick the task with arms or legs showing on the cover - we need to see those covers as we don't have time to click on each link to go and check :)
3. If a character has to do something - don't forget to write the sentence where they do it e.g. - Read a book where someone sews something - Feels Like Home by Lisa Ireland – pg 92 – it didn’t take Jo long to stitch the button back on
