Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories
discussion
In the Night Kitchen is written by the author of one of my favorite picture books of all time, "Where the Wild Things Are." These two stories are drastically different yet both entertaining at the same time. I can see why this book is controversial because of how the main character does not wear clothes for a large portion of the story. I think that takes a backseat to his adventure. The artwork is great, I especially liked how his dream took place in a large city and how the 3 chefs were as big as skyscrapers. This book is purely for entertainment, though seeing some of the other reviews on here there could be some underlying messages I am missing.
Yertle the Turtle by Doctor Seuss
Yertle the Turtle has a great underlying message alongside beautiful artwork. I use this book in my 5th grade classroom to introduce the American Revolution and the many perspectives involved in a struggle for power. I can see why some might view this story as controversial because of the nature of how the leader is toppled, but I think it shows great insight into what is like to feel powerless.
