I read the book last month and saw the film this week. I recommend that order, but the movie stands on its own without all the background. I loved the book but the movie was rich and overwhelming. I don't know of a more successful pairing of book and film....I guess both convey the director's vision. The movie is so visual and dreamy. I think the book does the same thing successfully (except with the additional nightmare Amazon sequence).
