Four hundred seventy two days....

Fifteen and a half months.... Sixty seven weeks.... Eleven thousand three hundred twenty eight hours. No matter how you look at it, four hundred seventy two days is a long time. Imagine spending nearly all of that time in a wooden box so small you had to sit in a fetal position. Water and food only came every few days. Showers were rare. You weren’t allowed to use the bathroom, so your only option was to soak in your own urine. You’re only let out of this tiny prison to be raped and abused by a cruel man. For nearly a year and a half, this was Flora’s life. In Lisa Gardner’s mystery and thriller, Find Her, we are told the story of a teen who is broken down, and her life during and after these four hundred seventy two days.

Florence Dane, nicknamed Flora, is a teen who grew up on a small farm in Maine. She ends up on spring break in Florida. Slightly intoxicated and dancing with her friends one minute, then the next Flora’s being taken from right off the beach and never to be heard from again. It’s not until a few months after her disappearance that Flora is finally heard from. Just a few sentences on a postcard sparked the police department’s search for the missing teen. Flora’s world gets flipped upside down and there seems to be no end to the madness in sight. Gardner draws the reader in by changing between different points of views, as well as different period of time. The reader is given different perspectives on different scenes. The fast pace of the book as well as the suspense at the end of each chapter creates for an enticing book that leaves the reader wanting more.

Gardner established strong characters from the beginning of the book. Each character has a tremendous amount of detail and background that strengthens the meaning of the character. The author is very careful with her words when describing a character. She makes sure each character acts and is understood by the reader exactly how she wants. I truly couldn’t ask the author for much more when it comes to character development. By the end of the book, I felt I genuinely knew each character and had known them for some time.

Find Her has become one of my favorite books. I was never able to find a mystery/thriller book that truly captured my attention. Find Her, however, drew me in and made me feel as though I was a part of every scene. Although the book’s vocabulary was easy to understand, at times it was hard to read about some of the topics the author touched upon. For example, Flora’s captor abused her for nearly all of the time he had her in his possession. She was raped, beat, starved, and put in unhealthy and unsanitary position. In my last book, The Sun and Her Flowers, topics such as these were also introduced, so to see them again was not a surprise. I was strongly recommend this book to anyone. Anyone who is looking for a good book should pick up Find Her. When you pick up Find Her, you can expect to never want to put it down. Prepare to be drawn in by every page and experience a thrilling and mysterious kidnapping.
