Listopia Challenge
Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews ★★★★
This is a smart, funny, fierce urban fantasy set in present dayish alternate earth, with magic and a bad-ass heroine. A reckless, dangerous, magic-drunk thug is on the run from the law, and his powerful family has hired a private investigation firm to haul him in before the police find (and shoot) him. Our heroine is forced to take the job of hauling him in, and we are off and running! There is also a mysterious, magical hero involved, who is a little bit too alpha-male for my tastes, but our intrepid heroine finds herself inconveniently attracted to him.
I loved how close the heroine was with her family, the mystery, and the detailed world building. The book was addictive, and I read it in one sitting. The only thing I did not like was the piles of guns and the loving way that they were described, and (view spoiler)[ the kidnapping and mental torture that the ‘hero’ committed on our heroine; I would not be able to forgive him so easily. Granted, working together seemed like a necessity for her and her family’s survival, and it did introduce a lot of tension into the relationship that really sparked. (hide spoiler)]
