We have a thread for your main character. But is your main character your favourite?

Do you like the hero? The Villain? Or the minor character with the interesting backstory?

Shannon Pemrick I love about 95% of my characters so it's hard to pick just one as a favorite. Each character is fairly unique with a few traits that overlap but not all making that choice just too hard.

Brian Basham (brianbasham) | 390 comments Oooo... that's a good question. My favorite character in Grim would probably be the demon Ornias. He's devious and snarky.

For Virtual Wars it would be Hannah who is one of the MC's love interests. She is sarcastic and fun. She also likes to be in control. The MC plays into it and he's an interesting character, but Hannah is more complex.

The Ghost's main character is also sacastic, but a bit more serious. She's definitely my favorite in that story.

I'm seeing a pattern here. I'm loving my more complex characters who are sarcastic/snarky.

Samantha Strong (samanthalstrong) | 206 comments Villain. Always. I love well-written three- dimensional characters, and I feel like villains are usually more likely to be complex than heroes.

Evil characters are fun to write. I had a blast writing Destiny, the antagonist in the sequel of same name. There is just something about them that makes the hating turn into maybe not as far as calling it love, but rather a mutual understanding. They seem to warn you to let them be and do what they want or else... And you've got to respect that.
So to answer you question, my fav character is incontestably my main char LX, but Destiny is not far behind. :>

You know you're in a group of writers when a response like that is considered normal and relatively sane, hahaha!

@Brian hahaha ooooh yeah! ;) Don't get me wrong, sometimes I love to hate a character. Sometimes I love to love a character. Either way I know better than to get too attached if ya know what I mean ;)

J. David Clarke (clarketacular) | 418 comments In my current series each chapter is from the POV of one character. And it flashes back and forth in time, giving you glimpses of the person's past, present, and even future. Thus, I explore a lot of a person in a very short space, and I find that my favorite tends to be whoever I'm writing at the moment. I guess you have to love someone to see their hopes and dreams and worst fears and go along with them as they triumph or fail.

Rebecca Reilly (goodreadscomrebeccareilly) | 2 comments My favorite characters to write are the supplemental, comic relief ones that appear quickly and are gone. They must be crafted with few words, paint a vivid picture, and serve a purpose (even if the purpose is to make me smile). Manny in "Into Dark Waters" is one of my favorites.

Claire | 7 comments I find that I love a lot of my secondary characters, mainly because I find it so hard to write primary characters.

I like my minor characters because soemtimes they end up much more important than I intended xD

E.L. Mendell | 8 comments I have a character I've loved since I created him. :D He's the only one that knows whats going on, but he's got the personality of a child with moments of intense authority. His personality is what makes him wonderful. He isn't the main character either, but he is important to the story. :)

Oli Jacobs (olijba) I'm always a big lover of my villains, and my current one has a doozy: Waylon Haynes. A sociopathic outlaw who cut a Chelsea Grin into himself to scare another bandit. Crazy as a fox.

From my published work, though, I have to say Guy from Strange Days in High Wycombe is a favourite, just due to his pompous anti-hero-ness. He was devised as a Withnail/Raoul Duke type character, and has gained, shall we say, mixed reactions...

message 17: by S.R. (new)

S.R. Hughes (thesrhughes) I suppose it depends on the project. In my published book, the MC is definitely my favorite because I think she's easy to relate to. She's flawed, weak, feels out of control of her own life, and is struggling to keep her head above a rising tide. And that's before the rest of the awful stuff happens.

Villains are very fun, but I have fallen out of love with the term "villain." I mean, if someone's goal is supreme control or destruction or some such, yes, call a spade a spade by all means...but most antagonists end up being much more complicated, vulnerable and flawed people in their own right. I think people enjoy villains because of the psychology of an antagonist. What drives someone to do these things? How quickly could that happen to someone? How close are any of us to villainy? Ho-hum.

Also, in writing the sequel to my first book, I've fallen in love with another character, as well.

Actually, I love all of my characters. I must. Because as the saying goes, "you always hurt the ones you love."
