What Genre do you write?

message 2: by P.D. (new)

P.D. Workman (pdworkman) Mostly Young Adult. Some Adult Mystery/Suspense as well.

Brittany Willows (brittanymwillows) Science fiction, mainly. But I like to dabble in other genres such as steampunk and fantasy in my spare time. I enjoy the freedom that these genres provide when it comes to creating worlds. :)

Susan Hayes | 4 comments My genre is romance, and I write mostly sci-fi and paranormal as sub-genres, though I have a contemporary series as well. (Why stick to just one?)

My primary genre was contemporary romance, but over the past decade or so, I've moved more into Speculative Fiction. What made you chose paranormal and SF as your sub-genres? And what constitutes paranormal to you? I hope other will answer this question, too, if it applies to their writing. Refuge (The Chronicles of Storn, #1) by Judy Griffith Gill

Susan Hayes | 4 comments I write what I love, which seems to have a great deal to do with the countless hours I spent watching Star Trek and playing Dungeons and Dragons during my formative years. My "paranormal" books include characters who are shape shifters, werewolves, vampires and one victim of a very cranky ghost.

Thanks, Susan.
I've been wondering (for some time now) why ESP has apparently faded from the "paranormal" spectrum. Shifters, Werewolves, Vampires and the like have always seemed to me to be far more closely related to fantasy, but expanded mental powers have always felt like a real possibility because I am, as my grandmother used to say, "fey", meaning sensitive to other people's thoughts, moods, and emotions. That's what I love to write about, and what my new series involves.

Again, I hope others will respond to this thread. I belong to the Post Apocalyptic group and one thing I really don't get (and don't much like) is the propensity of Post Apocalyptic writers to put zombies in as a key plot element. Of course, it's fun to think the dead might rise up and become a threat, but I fear the living a lot more. Have you any interest in checking out that group? There are a lot of good books and writers over there if you're interested.

Richard Myerscough | 3 comments I like to write books that make the hairs on the back of your head stand on end, in other words, gory action/thrillers with a side dish of horror. I believe that if you write about the plausible it gets inside the reader minds, whereas zombies and vampires are implausible and therefore easily shrugged off as fun fiction.
The books I write shows the dark side in which we all have. If cornered in a life of death situation, what are you truly capable of. Now put human emotions inside of vicious creatures that are fighting for their survival.

hey there Maggie! I'm a Canuck and this is my favorite genre to write in also. Cheers! Mo Pigeon, author of Strange Things Done.

Christine Hayton (ccmhayton) I write horror, literary, romance and contemporary fiction. Just had a horror novella (SCARECROWS) released in May. Also just finished the final draft of my contemporary fiction novel based on small town Canada. I have several short stories currently in contests and others on my web site. I'm also working on a horror novel that should be completed in August 2015. I love to see writers work in several genres. It scared me at first - but I can't believe how much I learned and how much fun it is to stretch your horizons.

Nanci Pattenden | 5 comments Victorian murder mysteries. My series is set in Toronto, but I have my detective travelling a little bit. First book he made a lot of trips to Stouffville, and the current one has had a few trips to Kingston, Woodbridge, and Pine Grove. Not sure where he will travel to for the third book. I'd like to have him go somewhere in York Region each time.

E. Graziani (egrazianiauthor) I tend to write in the YA category though not in any particular genre- I have YA scifi romance with a little time travel thrown in and a memoir, both traditionally published, plus a women's fiction novella, also pubbed. I'm now working on a gritty YA novel about troubled youth. Hope that gets picked up, too.

Shannon Peel (shannonpeel) | 2 comments I prefer to write for grades 6-9 - action targeted mostly at boys.

I do have a series of fantasy romance novellas that are for adults and that is fun to write too. I do hope to work them into a full size novel after I've finished my THIRTEEN series... Which isn't going to be the name of the series - it's just the name of the first book.

J.S. Marlo | 8 comments I write romantic suspense/mystery, but I just started a new series that will also include paranormal elements. I've never written a ghost before, so this is interesting.

Most of my books take place in Canada, and when they don't, the odds are there will be a main Canadian character in them.

message 21: by Janice (new)

Janice Richardson | 5 comments A Canadian cozy writer, I have branched out a bit with a literary fiction standalone and a series with two older protagonists. I love reading Canadian fiction and fiction from the UK. My favourite Cnd book is A Funny Kind of Paradise by Jo Owens.

message 22: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Marlo | 8 comments I like to write romantic suspense and mystery novels, many of them with older women and men as my main characters. In The Red Quilt, a Christmas mystery novel set in PEI, I have a grandpa raising his little granddaughter alone.

I even added ghosts in a few of them, but I try to set most of them in Canada, or have Canadian characters.
