Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3894 comments Do any of you listen to podcasts? I just recently discovered the purple podcast icon on my iPhone and found some literary podcasts: Levar Burton Reads (short fiction), Fictional (selected chapters from classics & some short fiction), and Myths & Legends. They are fun to listen to! I can handle a 30 minute to 1 hr podcast but not a 15+ hour audiobook. Levar Burton (of Roots and Star Trek TNG fame) is a great narrator! Anyone have other podcast suggestions?

Rachelnyc | 943 comments I love listening to podcasts during my commute but haven't really searched for literary ones yet. I'll definitely check out the Levar Burton one and the NYPL (New York Public Library) has one I've been meaning to try as well.

My favorite podcast is Revolutions. The podcaster is terrific and turned the first iteration of his podcast, The History of Rome into The Storm Before the Storm: The Beginning of the End of the Roman Republic, which I've been meaning to read.

Thanks Rachel! The Revolutions one sounds really interesting. I love anything to do with history!

I’ve listened primarily to true crime podcasts but it’s a been a while. I really should get back to them. Both Criminal and Serial are fantastic.

Laura, Serial has a new season coming out soon, and it sounds really good!

The only literary podcast I listen to is Harry Potter and the Sacred Text, which has made my rereading of the books a completely different experience. They go chapter-by-chapter and discuss the book using methods that theologians use to read sacred texts (the Bible, the Torah, etc). It's my favorite!

I struggle with literary podcasts that talk about books because I just don't care unless they are discussing books that I've read haha!

Pam, I hope you like Revolutions. I haven't listened to all of them yet but the episodes on the French and the American revolutions are fantastic. Mike Duncan is very engaging.

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments I don't listen to literary podcasts, but I absolutely love Let's Know Things. The guy talks about different topics (usually liked to the news) and explains (even disects) them from different point of vew (political, social, economical, psychological, technological, etc.). A great conversation starter if you listen to it with someone else. My boyfriend and are are constantly pausing to talk about what he's saying ;)

message 8: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3894 comments Thanks Sophie! That sounds like a good one!

I just saw that! I googled it because of this discussion and it popped up. I also saw that Adnan Sayed, the guy from the first season is getting a new trial. Pretty exciting :)

message 10: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3894 comments Laura- Criminal sounds good, too!

I feel like I’ve been missing out on a whole world of entertainment/information. Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

Kelly Audiogirl.booking.it (audiogirlbookingit) | 488 comments Oh I loved the first “serial” it was so intriguing!! My favorite podcast tho is the “what should I read next” by Anne Bogel I get tons of great book recommendations and it’s very fun to listen to the books and reading chatter! ;)

message 12: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 112 comments Any Tims here? ;)

I also listen to Fictional and Myths and Legends but I am so far behind! It's hard for me to the listen to the storytelling podcasts because I often find that I stop listening and have to rewind.

I follow a couple of podcasts, but my only literary one is Overdue, which I've just recently discovered. Two guys trade off reading a book they 'should have read by now' and they talk about it. Putting it like that it sounds really boring but they have a good sense of humor.

message 14: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3894 comments Sounds interesting Jackie! I’ll give it a try. Thanks!

message 15: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3894 comments I just starting listening to "He Read, She Read", a husband/wife podcast. They were featured on a "What Should I Read Next" episode so I thought I'd give it a listen. Of course, I added a few more books to my TBR, based on one episode. It's nice that they have different reading interests, his is more non-fiction based (with some fantasy) and hers is fiction (although her favorite 2018 book is a memoir!)

message 16: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3894 comments Ann Bogel, The host of What Should I Read Next? has a new podcast, which started today, called One Great Book.

message 17: by Irene (new)

Irene | 93 comments My favorites are No such thing as a fish and freakonomics podcasts. No such thing as a fish is really funny and I often have to remember not to laugh out loud if I am listening at work, they talk about 3 or 4 unknown facts at each episode from the news or from history, and while I don't remember any of the actual facts right now they are usually quite interesting and entertaining. Freakonomics is about economics (duh) but also in a very light and funny way. I have a hard time focusing on podcasts though, depends on what else I am doing at the same time, so I end up rewinding and relistening a lot.

Wow that is a lot of PODCASTS... :) I like the idea of podcasts... but feel that they cut into my audiobook time so I have a hard time keeping up with them.

Same, Kelly.

SadieReadsAgain (sadiestartsagain) | 452 comments Yeah, I get that. It probably goes without saying that I don't do a whole load of audiobooks!

message 22: by Cheri (new)

Cheri (jovali2) | 542 comments My absolute favorite book podcast is no longer being made!! But all the archives are available, and there are plenty. It's the Slate Audio Book Club. Three people discuss one book for about an hour, and they're great! All sorts of books are discussed -- everything from Jane Austen to Harry Potter to Lincoln in the Bardo.

message 23: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3894 comments I listened to the most recent (Episode 180) What Should I Read Next podcast. The guest is Liberty Hardy, a Book Riot employee who reads for a living. She reads 600 books a year, 10-17 hours per day! I'm still trying to process those numbers. 1.6 books per day! I don't think I would want to read that much. I like to have some time to think about what I've read AND to do other things! It was a really good show and a little different format than the usual.

message 24: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Wow, 10 to 17 hours a day, that’s mad! I love reading, but after a while I need to be doing something else, except if I’m really entranced in a book that keeps me awake half the night, but that’s quite rare.

message 25: by sarah ✨ (new)

sarah ✨ (sarahreadstheclassics) I listen to Book Riot's podcasts All The Books and Get Booked. I sometimes listen to Literary Disco. Those are just my book podcasts though.

message 26: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3894 comments I just started listening to a new literary podcast called Strong Sense of Place, which I’m enjoying. Anne Bogle had the 2 podcasters from the show on her show, which is where I learned about it.

message 27: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments Bookish podcasts:
New York Times Book Review
The Bookshelf (Australian Broadcasting Company)
Books and Authors (BBC)
Teen Creeps (YA horror)
Smart Podcast, Trashy Books (romance)
Reading Glasses
Most Notorious (interviews with true crime authors)

message 28: by Janell (new)

Janell | 57 comments I listen to podcasts quite a lot too - usually when walking.

Literary-ish:
The Allusionist (all about words)
Overdue (two goofy guys take turns reading books and talking about them)
Harry Potter and the Sacred Text (chapter-by-chapter reading of HP books analysed as though they were sacred texts)

Other:
Dear Hank & John (2 brothers offer advice & humor)
No Dumb Questions (a rocket scientist & a pastor)
Delete This (husband & wife discuss Twitter)
Sci-Show Tangents (lightly competitive science)
Hello Internet (2 guys talking - geeky, funny)
The Anthropocene Reviewed (reviews of very random things)
The Unmade Podcast (podcast ideas - and lots of laughs)
Part-Time Genius (kind of science trivia?)
The Numberphile Podcast (interviews with mathematicians)
Revisionist History (2nd look at historical things)
The Bugle (Political/current events humor)
Ridiculous History (Odd historical things)
Omnibus (More odd historical things)
Adam Ruins Everything (Challenging our assumptions about everything)
The Infinite Monkey Cage (An astrophysicist and a comedian)
Welcome to Night Vale (Scripted drama - Kind of a horror version of Prairie Home Companion)

message 29: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina (semisabrina) Huge podcast fan! A definite favorite is You're Wrong About which is deeper dives on on the back stories of news events that we often just get headlines for.
