If you're going to do the Birdman buddy read, then you need to wait until Jannene starts the thread. If you're starting your own buddy read for a different book, then just start the topic.

You're welcome. There doesn't have to be just one Buddy Read going on at any one time -- if anyone else wants to moderate one, jump in!
Well, there you go. Throw it out to the group to get some like-minded people, pick a book and post a new thread
I'm thinking we need some foreign crime fiction here - anyone up for some Inspector Montalbano (by Andrea Camilleri) for October?

No one replied, but I'm up for it! Can you convince anyone else to join in?

I don't know anyone on here, I've just joined really. I could shout out the window. Oh hang on I will put something on Facebook, that might work. The first one appears to be... The Shape of Water. Let me try on FB.

You're a freakin' riot. LOL The best one, IMO, is August Heat, but that's way into the series. And hello, welcome to the group.

I'm a translated crime fiction addict, and I've read all of Camilleri's books. But they're always fun to revisit. Or even better, we can pick another author! But please, sort of out of the mainstream.
I love translated crime fiction. Currently trying to make my way through a lot of nordic crime. LOLAlways up for getting to know a knew author so I'd definitely be up to it. (just give me time to get the book delivered here lol )

Camilleri's series is fun. In his books, especially the later ones, it's not so much about the crimes, but about the people surrounding the main character Inspector Montalbano, and Montalbano himself.

I haven't read any of Camilleri's books yet but by any chance, is anyone interested in reading the first book The Benson Murder Case in the Philo Vance series by SS Van Dine? I love classics and I love crime and what better than a classic crime series? I'll be starting the book next week, in case anyone is interested.
Nancy and Helena I am open to your suggestions as this isn't my field of expertise. Ishita I will join you. Will buy it now.

I see Ishita has stolen you, so after you read SS Van Dine, let's regroup for The Shape of Water.

You are the envy of me right now, Trevor! Van Dine is out of publishing here in India. It's not a very long book- 25 chapters. What say 5 a day? Or do you have a suggestion? :)
I'll join you whenever you decide to read The Shape of Water! Looking forward to getting into a new series.edited to add: just finished posting this and switched on bbc four (was searching for something to watch) and an episode of the TV series was on. I'd never heard of the series before so thought it was quite the coincidence!
My second hand copy of Benson has a really old business card for a restaurant in New York inside. I love it already. Yes, okay, Ishita, five chapters a day -- that'll be pushing it for me but I'll do my best. Starting tomorrow. Or now. Helena yes, cool, I will get hold of a copy of TSOW this week. What shape is water anyway? Kind of... watery? I guess we'll find out...
I love finding old bookmarks or random things in old books. The other day I found one which had a nice little note from a girl to her boyfriend. The book was from the nineties and I found myself wondering if they were still together and married now lol.
Okay Ishita do we have to start a thread for Benson? How does it work? btw with work and family commitments I think I'll struggle to do five chapters a day -- can we make it three? Enjoying it so far.

I'll make one for you. Others may want to read as well.

Sorry, I had a busy weekend and a busier Monday!Trevor, we can make it 3 or even 2 if you like, anything that's fine with you :)
I never owned a second hand copy myself but I'd love to find something like this in mine. There aren't a lot of good second hand book stores in my city.
Thanks a lot, Nancy :)

There is great joy in owning secondhand copies, especially when you find cool stuff in them. I have a box of stuff I've found inside books that I've kept for years (drives my husband nuts). I've found a funeral announcement, business cards, a letter from the 1940s from a woman to a soldier telling him it's over, an insurance policy -- and the list goes on.

books seem to hold beautiful secrets, not only of its characters but the people who own them too. That letter sounds like it must've been beautiful!I'll look around for some second hand stores too!

Actually, it wasn't very nice. I felt really sorry for the guy.

Oh, I'm sorry, I read- telling him how she felt!Ah, poor guy! Talking about it feels like talking about another letter in the history where someone else knows all about it and I'm in the dark!
There's a little store here in this thriving metropolis where I live that sells consignment antique furniture in the front and books in the back. The guy goes around buying up book collections from estate sales, and that's a treasure trove of included extras, since the people are either dead or they've forgotten they've stuck in a book.
I have to say that once I was in a huge hurry to get things put away, and I shoved a $100 itunes gift card in a book and still haven't found it! I know it's here, because I check each and every book that leaves the house.

That happens to me with bookmarks. I supposedly collect them, but I always forget them at the back of the first book I use them in so I have loads of cool bookmarks lost in loads of books. I also find loads of plane, train, bus tickets in books cos I love reading when travelling (makes it pass so much faster) and then I just tend to stick them in the back and forget all about them. But must say never lost anything worth 100$ in a book!

Once I left $40 in a copy of I, Claudius. We were moving, and the kids were playing around while they were helping me pack books, and the money fell out. Each kid grabbed a $20 and wouldn't give them up!

$40 left in I, Claudius? You could nearly make a joke about it being a Greek tragedy but sadly they were Romans... Another 'great' gag thwarted!
I hate parting with my books. Everytime I so much as even think of selling a book, I feel like I am cheating on a story that belongs to someone. And I am not overplaying it! But I've often lent my books to people and sometimes they haven't returned them back. I hate when that happens. I can never remember if I've shoved anything inside a book so I won't even remember if I lost anything but if there's one thing I am sure about- I've never lost gift cards or money shoved inside them!
I have a nominated this Storm Front a couple of times now in nominations. It as finished up there both times but not quite made it into the top two. This book is the 1st in a series (which has got decent reviews). I was wondering if anybody wanted to read this as a buddy read, probably starting in the new year?
Kieron wrote: "Hope. we can get a few more people on board over the next month and start this in January 2015."I will read. I have the paperback sitting on my bedstand just waiting for me to pick it up!
