What better friendship is there but between man and his dog?

Thereby Hangs a Tail is a mystery novel that investigates a potential threat against a world class show dog and her owner. Detective Bernie Small and his parter Chet are on the case. The real joy of this novel is that the mystery is told completely by the dog's point of view!

Some of the biggest challenges in a mystery is giving the reader enough of a scope to understand a mystery but not enough to have them solve it before the final reveal. Some authors choose to do this by hiding information through character interactions. How Quinn combats this is changing the focus of the narrator. Chet, although a loyal and hard-working detective, is a dog and is understandably distracted. Some of the best parts of the book is when he explains something multiple times because he "forgot" he told the reader previously or when Bernie is having an important conversation with a suspect, but Chet is distracted by a ball.

It's such a unique spin on the mystery genre that I had to give it a try. However, don't let the light-hearted nature turn you away. Although the novel never gets gritty, the themes of the book are mature and not just for kids. As someone who doesn't particularly like mysteries but is forever fond of dogs, Thereby Hangs a Tail is highly recommended.

I love Chet the Jet. Chet and Bernie do have a great friendship.

I just picked this up, now I can't wait to read it! Chet and Bernie are so much fun.
