CHAPTER ONE: REVISED EDITION The morning air was fresh on my shoulders as I zapped into a tree behind school. Thank god I was allowed to use teleportation spells, I would rather be caught dead than go to school in that disgusting yellow bus. My god, kindergartener kid snot, candy wrappers coating the floor, bus drivers playing emo music - I think I'll pass. (It's not like my parents can drive me - they don't have the witch gene and go to work at like six A.M.)
Smoothing my peach and burgundy striped shirt I continued walking up the sidewalk, baby blue backpack swung over one shoulder. Though it had two textbooks in it, a hardcover book, and a change of shoes, it was as light as air - naturally, using a light-as-air spell one can expect that result.
As I came closer, I spotted all of them but Nancy. She's the one who has to ride the horror of horrors, more commonly known as "The school bus."
"Morning, everyone. What's the latest news?"
As I sashayed up the front steps of the school, I saw seven silhouettes against the morning sun. My girls. The ones the kids with nerd glasses and two braids call mean girls, but let's face it. In every environment, there has to be a alpha wolf, dominant group. Might as well be us, with me at the very head of it, in seventh grade middle school. Caroline, Melissa, Jonquil, Tanya, Britta, Carson, Nancy, Hannah. Together we are unstoppable.
Scratch that. I am unstoppable without them. They are nothing without me - the one who reminds them of sales and occasionally gets one invited to a party.
"Hey Krista!" Hannah was the first to speak up- always bubbly and a bit of an airhead, but never behind on the latest news. "Did you hear? Hollister is having a doorbuster next Tuesday! Everything's going to be, like, thirty percent off!"
I nodded approvingly. "That's good. Anyone else hear that Sonata Acevedo is doing this year's Seventh Heaven party? I'm invited."
Carson gasped. "Seriously? You've been invited?"
I nodded smugly.
Hannah's face is a confused jumble. "Seventh Heaven? Like the TV show?"
I shake my head no. Hannah's the girl dubbed with the "New Kid" title ever since she moved here in June. Naturally she had no idea about the party. "It's the biggest teen-hosted middle school event in the school. Each year a different eight grader hosts it by way of vote - only crazy eights attend most years - I guess a Sevie like me couldn't be missed. It's in two weeks."
Carson's jealously crumples her face up, almost making her blonde eyebrows look like a unibrow. "Prove it!"
I smile and pull a black-and purple invitation out, pointing at the silver lettering. Carson snatches it out of my hand. After expecting it for a moment, she gives it back to me and rolls her eyes. "I heard she's still handing out some invitations - maybe one of you'll get one yet." Yeah, fat chance. Honestly, I love some of these girls, but none of them are cool enough to be me.
As they stared at me enviously, I flipped my blonde hair, careful not to wrinkle my top. "Don't feel to bad...I'll let you girls in on all the drama." Giving them another smile, I dismissed it. "We can talk about my great social status rise at lunch. On with the drama reports."
"Kentucky's mother had another baby. This one's supposedly named -"
"Please, Caroline. Everyone's heard that. Besides, you're one to talk, aren't you?"
"Caroline. C-A-R-O-L-I-N-E. Carolina has an A, Krista." She gives a weak deflect to my jab.
"Hey, calm down. Take a joke. But seriously. Any real news?"
Hannah attempts to save her friend. "Damien Hawthorne tried sneaking into the girl's locker room."
"I know, Hannah, I was there." My annoyance seeps into my voice.
"What's biting you today? Seriously, you're never this crabby." Nancy's annoyance is not as subtle, her delicate Jamaican features marred by a frown.
Oh, you know. Being a witch, taking finals so I can become a full witch, that spell that ruined my iPhone, little things like that. Not that I can tell you - stupid witch laws.
Instead, I turn to Melissa. "You've been quiet this morning, Lissa. Don't tell me you haven't heard anything over the whole weekend?"
Melissa chews her lip. "Well...."
I stare at Melissa, watching as she plays with a strand of her blue hair for a few seconds. "What?"
Her attention snaps back to me. "Rumor has it that Jack and Macey are an item."
My eyes probably looked like they bulged out of my head like some kind of gross mutant fish. "Melissa. If you're going to lie to me, at least try to make it convincing. You know I can spot a lie with my eyes closed. I'm not in the mood for this."
Jonquil piped up. "Melissa isn't lying, Krista. I think you're the one out of the loop."
I let out a heartless laugh. "I was testing you. Of course I knew." Inside my head, I began calculating a spell to get Jack to break up with his little friend.
"Stop lying to us - everybody knows you weren't on a cruise last month, just skipping so you could pretend your family was as rich as Jonquil's." Tanya fires back fiercely. Her peppery hair gives her a quick temper.
I step up to her in annoyance. "If you have any sense at all, you would realize I know more secrets about you that you do about me." I hiss the words softly into her ear, and all she gives me in response is a sickly sweet smile - she knows I want a reaction.
Jonquil only does what she does best - staring and looking pretty with her hazel hair and bright green eyes, feigning innocence. We both know better.
Instead of slapping her and Tanya senseless, I turn to Britta.
"Britta, you haven't shared any news in two weeks. Surely you've heard something?"
She shakes her head, and I stare disdainfully down at her green skinny jeans. "Britta, being part of the Pearl Girls means contributing. And being fashionable.
Before I can add more, Britta cuts me off in her smooth, shy, but somewhat unsure voice. While her beauty is there, she lacks a snappy personality like Jonquil and Nancy. "There's....um...a new girl....but I'm sure you've heard that....."
My eyes widen in surprise. "Is that so? When did she move in?"
"On Friday evening. She lives across the street from my cousin." Britta's back has straightened up and she tucks a stray lock of brown hair behind her ear. Her face, however, maintains the expression of Kristen Stewart when she plays Bella in Twilight.
Hannah interrupts my interrogation with a shout. "Yes! Finally free of the "New Kid" title!"
"Yeah....now you're the 'Second Newest Kid.'" Jonquil gives one of her signature lopsided smiles. Hannah pushes her with a playful shove in return.
"Never mind that. Where's her locker? Do any of you know?" Or do I have to cast a spell and do something myself again?
"I so knew you would ask that! So I personally found out myself - I met her when I went to my cousin's house. It's 755." Despite her obvious over enthusiasm, Britta maintains her Kristen Stewart face.
"Wicked Perfect. Nancy, looks like you've got a locker-neighbor. You and Jonquil come with me." Nancy gives a ruby-red lip gloss smile.
"Can I come? She's met me before and it might not be as awkward for her -"
"No, Britta, that's fine." Don't need you tagging along.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Exactly 35 minutes before school started, me and my girls met in front of school. By "My girls," I mean, my clique. There are 9 of us, and I'm totally their leader. I rule the 7th grade domain at this school. This school happens to be tiny, just like this town, but one day I'll be a fashion designer. My girls: Lexi, Melissa, Emma, Tanya, Sara, Carson, Madison, Hannah. Lately I've had my doubts about Sara. She is totally slipping from fab to geek.
"What's the latest gossip?" I ask them. "I heard Jessica is FINALLY Coming to her senses and totally, like, ditching Mike."
"Seriously? She ditched the Geek?" Carson asked, giving a smile that showed off her white teeth.
"You never know. She might lose her nerve." Melissa gossiped.
"Totally! she could really be one of us, if she shopped at some decent places, and that stuff." I replied.
They all nodded. "Your pedicure is so CUTE, Melissa!" exclaimed Sara. I glared at her.
"Um....Melissa's pedicure is so, like, OUT. Green, Melissa? Really?"
Melissa blushed. "I'm getting a new one tonight."
I nodded. "Good. Any other gossip?"
The next 15 minutes consisted of the usual reports. So-and-So and gotten the ugliest haircut, someone else had a epic top, Maddie's bratty cousin had completely ruined her new pair of designer jeans. Tanya had the cutest sunglasses. Outfit check? I was wearing white capris, a ruffle blue top, this cute white jean jacket, opal earrings and necklace, and a genuine imitation ring. I had on blue flip flops, white nail polish on by toes and feet, and a blue and white knit headband. perfect. Everyone else had on cute stuff too, (not as stylish as mine, but still good.) Everyone except Sara. Designer jean capris? Good. Hair down? Good. purple nail polish? Good. Real Gem Earrings? Good. No necklace? No bracelet? Baby doll top? NOT GOOD. After shunning her, we continued on talking.
Right before we had to split, Carson remembered something. "Oh! and there is a totally new girl!"
I smiled. "Interesting. 10 minutes to the bell." Pausing, I muttered a spell. "Magic, this is a wonder, give me the newbies locker number!" reaching into my pocket, I peeked at the number. 408. Right next to Emma's. I love having magic. If I need a cute shirt, all I have to do is point to my closet. If I need a massage, all I need is a little spell to transform my room into a temporary spa, complete with a cute guy. Too bad I can't tell my friends. To make matters better, in two short days I would be a full witch!
Then I snapped back to reality. Carson, Emma, lets go to your locker. The rest of you, I'll see you at lunch. Nobody get salad. You might get lettuce in your teeth and embarrass me."
Then the Carson, Emma, and me sashayed inside my school, and to Emma's Locker.
*********************************************************************** My magic was right. The new girl was there, getting books from her locker. I walked up to her. My mind labeled her instantly. Geek.
"Hi!" I said, all friendly. "I'm Stephanie. This is Carson," Carson stepped forward, "And Emma." Emma waved. (Not geekily, casually.)
"I'm Lisa." The newbie said, shyly. "I moved from Colorado. It's so different from North Dakota!"
I nodded. "Feel free to sit with us at lunch today. Table 7. The one by the big window."
Closing her locker, Lisa smiled. I nodded once more, tossing my hair and walked away.
Once we were a ways away, The three of us turned to each other, saying the same thing: "Geek."
"You guys go. I've got to grab my fascinating books on fascinating Algebra! We have a super fascinating test!" I giggled, sarcastically. After they walked away, I headed to my locker, applied two layers of Bloom Berry lip gloss, grabbed my books, and headed to Fascinating Algebra.
