One of the first 30 Cool Kids to comment this thread with the title of their best read this year will win a free book!

& to avoid self promotion it will be a choice from various ARCs (Advance Reader Copies) & anthologies I've been sent recently.

Go!

Ends when we get 30 replies. Winner randomly selected.

Steve | 3 comments Awesome idea. Thanks for posting this!
My favourite so far is Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames.

message 5: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Jones | 13 comments Best book I have enjoyed all year, tough one, would have to be Grey Sister followed closely by Oathbringer.

message 6: by Paul (new)

Paul | 18 comments A tough call but I loved All Systems Red by Martha Wells, and of course Grey Sister

message 7: by Jeni (new)

Jeni | 1 comments Most of the books I have 'read' this year have actually been audiobooks so if I discount them then the easy winner for me is Finch by Jeff VanderMeer.

message 8: by D. (new)

D. Moonfire (dmoonfire) | 6 comments The Final Lesson from Shakyra Dunn is my current favorite of the year. A bit of head-hoping but fun.

Head-hoping is one of those typos that sparks the imagination :)

message 10: by Khartun (new)

Khartun | 5 comments A Time of Dread is my favorite read so far. I'm a big Gwynne fan.

Jennifer (bunnyreads) | 4 comments False Idols by Jon Hollins. Such a great book and a great, little-read series. (it's book two)

message 12: by Lukasz (new)

Lukasz (visvamitra) | 8 comments Vita Nostra by Marina and Siergiey Dyachenko.

message 13: by Jon (new)

Jon Adams | 1 comments Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers and Kings of Paradise by Richard Nell.

message 14: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 142 comments I’ve had a really good reading year myself. Probably Grey Bastards, Red Sister and the Murderbot books stand out for me so far. Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie is up there too along with Illuminae. Oh and Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend. Sorry.....can’t pick just one.

message 15: by Joshua (new)

Joshua | 5 comments The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

message 16: by John (new)

Age of Assassins by RJ Barker with a special mention for Smilers Fair by Rebecca Levene .

The Beheader's Romance? The Fellowship of the Fleas? The Lice of Locke Lamora?

Typos are awesome, though humiliating.

Rebekah Teller (rebekah_teller) | 1 comments Not counting my husband's books, my favorite read this year has been Kings of Paradise by Richard Nell.

message 19: by Patricia (last edited Sep 24, 2018 09:30AM) (new)

Patricia Burroughs (pooks) The Ripper's Shadow by Laura Joh Rowland.

A female who shoots Victorian porn gets caught up in the danger and suspicion of a Ripper-copycat in Whitechapel. Yum.

Justin Probably Revenant Gun by Yoon Ha Lee but there's been a few great books I've read this year

message 27: by Anni (new)

Anni | 10 comments I really enjoyed the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn Series, starting with The Dragonbone Chair it's a little slow but the writing is just beautiful and after finishing Book 4 and looking back at the series altogether it just makes me happy :) I'm sure I'll reread the books someday!

Honorable mentions: The Waking Fire and Words of Radiance

message 32: by Shae (last edited Nov 07, 2018 05:16PM) (new)

Shae | 69 comments Out of 57 books read so far this year, I've only given 5 stars to 6 books.

Here's my top 5 :-)

1. Night (Wiesel) - saddest and most profound book I've read this year.
2. Grey Sister (Lawrence) - devoured this in 3 days!
3. The Tattooist of Auschwitz (Morris) - amazing true love story in a gut wrenching setting.
4. Senlin Ascends (Bancroft) - beautiful prose.
5. City of Brass (Chakraborty) - fantastic debut.

Jacqueline | 142 comments Update.....
I’ve been away from home for nearly a month and Hubby told me last night that there is a package for me sitting at home. God only knows how long it was at the Post Office though because he never checks the box. I’ll be home in a couple of days and I’ll tell you what I got 😃 Really excited 😆

message 48: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 142 comments Finally home and have ripped open my package 📦 It contains a beautiful signed hard back copy of Grey Sister. Thank you so very much Mark. I am looking looking forwards to reading it.

message 49: by Shae (new)

Shae | 69 comments That's awesome, Jacqueline :-)

message 50: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 142 comments It is :) Especially since in Australia almost all new releases are paperbacks but still cost the earth. Including this one. It’s very rare we get the hardbacks unless we order them from overseas. It’s very special.
