Julian Arz | 3 comments I read this about 10 years ago. It might have been a recommendation of a student of american/english literature.. so maybe a classic. Pretty sure it was a novel, not short story.
The single protagonist (male, I believe) is on a journey, where he encounters lots of weird stuff. The mood is not funny, rather dark. dreamish. I don't think the protagonist knows where he is going.
In my head, I have associations to M.C.Escher (clocks, mirrors, stairs).
!!Spoiler!! The end is the same as the beginning, starting all over - narrative loop. I have further associations to opposing mirrors, or
a box inside a box inside a box.... Maybe metafiction.
At the time, my interpretation was that 'while we believe our life is a journey, we are actually trapped in a ever repeating daily struggle', with ideas of 'what is reality?' and 'free choice?'
I hope you can help.

Emmy (emmy205) | 99 comments Hi, Julian:

When you mentioned a book that starts and ends at the same point, it made me think of Finnegans Wake. Does that sound familiar?

Julian Arz | 3 comments Hello Emmy, thanks for your reply. Yes, I know about Finnegans Wake. It's not the book I am searching for, because I have never read it. I would know :)
The story I am searching for was an easy read. No complicated sentences.
I have made some research myself, and stumbled upon some authors who have written this kind of fiction. James Joyce, as you mention. Jorge Luis Borges. Kafka, but I think the story was in English, and I would have read Kafka in German. Edgar Alan Poe, which is interesting because I know I have read a collection of short stories by Poe. Maybe it was a short story after all. I will try to dig into short stories by Poe, if I have some free time.

James Branch Cabell is another author you might want to check out. I haven't read much of his work, just one book that I read for an American Lit class in college.

Rachel | 1527 comments Jerome K. Jerome is another possible author to look into, but I don't know his stories well enough to narrow it down.

Julian Arz | 3 comments So about two months ago, I finally found the book. I bought it and just finished reading it some minutes ago. It was The Third Policeman.

My guess today is that I did not read the book before, but rather listened to it as an audiobook. At the time I was on the road a lot. While driving, concentrating on such a plot is not easy. Hence, I did not really get most of it.
But actually my description from six years ago wasn't that bad. It IS about a weird journey.
OK, my interpretation doesn't match the interpretation of the author. But even though I know what the author said about the book, I prefer my interpretation - that we are trapped in an ever-repeating, weird but fun struggle.
