Arthur Dent finds himself back on Earth despite its having been blown up 8 years before. As he is trying to figure out what happened he meets a mysterious girl who is also questions what happened 8 years ago. During their quest and developing love they meet John Watson, Wonka the Sane, who's house is inside out, learn all the dolphins have disappeared, see London invaded by robots and get a visit from Ford Prefect. Then their quest takes them off planet. A little more logical with the same wacky humor and satire as the last book but still not as good as the first volume.

I remember loving this book, but I see what you mean about it not being as good as the first. I read all five of them in an omnibus, so the distinction between books isn't as sharp for me, I guess.

I read this in January and loved it, though yes it’s not as good as the others. Still liked the comedy and so many good quotes.

I've only listened to the first and the last ones on audio, which I loved.

I usually say this should be considered a 3 book series. 4 and 5 just aren't as good, but 4 does have a lot of great quotes so it's worth a go. I agree with your rating completely. Don't read Mostly Harmless. Nothing good can come of it.
