Hi Everyone!
I'm excited to be reading this in October. It's my favourite by Daphne du Maurier! Who will be joining me?

I've just read the first 50 pages or so, and I didn't remember that the novel was so bleak and dark right from the start... (It's been about 2 decades since I've read it last). I think the beginning is masterful, the way the character of our poor unnamed young woman with 'the unusual name' is introduced, is just wonderful.
That's interesting. I haven't read this book since I was a teenager and besides the major plot line, the feeling of bleakness is the only other thing that has stayed with me these years :)
I've finished the book last week, and I loved it. Like I said, this was my first re-read after 20 years or so, and I was a bit anyious because I had such fond memories of the book, and sometimes when you re-read a novel after a long time, its disappointing. But not with this one.I feel that DDM made an incredible 'jump' as a writer with this book. The characters are so well-rounded and interesting and Manderly is portrayed so vividly that I could see it in front of me. And the story, oh boy. Fascinating, dark, full of suspense. And despite the fact that I knew what would happen and I remembered the twist at the end very well, the book still kept me on the edge of the seat. Very happy that I (finally) re-read it.
I love this book. Read it so many years ago when I was in high school - so can’t wait to jump back in and see if my thoughts on it have changed now that I’m so much older. BTW - newbie to the group. I just joined & I’m so excited to read more of Daphne du Maurier.
I loved this reread!! This time around I listened to an audio version and it just seemed to add an additional atmospheric layer to my experience. I agree with previous comments that DDM really grew as an author in this novel-because of this reading project I realized how much. Is anyone else still surprised that we never learn the narrator’s name?
I re read this this month (August) but had to comment on this re-read for me. I absolutely loved it. The first time around i listened on audio book and although I liked it, I didn't love it. In the re read i appreciated how very beautiful the language is in this book. I kept thinking that DDM literally paints with words. Just gorgeous. Loved re reading this at my pace and getting swept away in the story through the language. Thanks Ange!
