I finished this last night. It had some beautiful bits. The ending was really wonderful but ... overall, it fell kind of flat for me. I got very bored in the middle and might have stopped reading if not for the Giller nomination. I gave it 3 stars but was contemplating 2 stars before the ending pulled it up.The flap copy compares this to The Time Traveler's Wife and Station Eleven, both of which I loved. Maybe that raised my expectations too much.
I gave it 3 stars too... i would have liked to have given it a 3.5 but it was not quite a 4. It was a slow read for me but would be an interesting book to discuss at book club or with my teenagers at the dinner table!

Read this today... I thought the plot and characters had a lot of potential but the book just sort of stopped without finishing. I’m a bit surprised it was shortlisted.
I finished this audiobook last night. I thought to rate it 3 stars, but ultimately couldn't bring myself to do it. In my opinion, 3 stars means it was okay, and this book was less than okay. Polly was usually lost, people were mostly mean to her, and I was generally bored. I went with 2 stars. Based on this analysis, it will probably win the Giller, since the blather that was Bellevue Square took the prize last year. Sigh.
