What If It's Us discussion

Hi all,

For those who don't know, What If It's Us is headed for the big screen (it's been optioned for a film). What actors would be your picks to play the different characters?

I'm currently reading it, and thought about fan casting the leads. 😊

Ben (Adam Silvera's protagonist) is tall, white-passing, and has dark hair.

Arthur (Becky Albertalli's protagonist) is short, blue-eyed, and wears glasses.

I pick Froy Gutierrez and Shawn Mendes for the roles of Ben and Arthur respectively. Froy has narrated a part of the audiobook of What If It's Us, and Shawn had auditioned for Love, Simon. If that's not a nudge by the universe, then I don't know what is.

I know Shawn Mendez did want to audition for the part of Simon in Love, Simon, I wud love for him to star in this movie if he is given the chance. I just hope he can act.

I can't believe this is headed for the big screen but I am insanely excited about it. I hope this will become the norm with love stories like this because the representation is so vitally important.

Same, I can imagine Noah Centineo as Ben. Froy Rodriguez as Arthur. Nat Wolff is okay. He’s a good actor.

I agree with your Arthur. With Ben, I imagine Noah Centineo, he’s tall and white-passing and he’s got black hair.

Somebody asked who would play Dylan and I think Dylan O’Brien would be great!

okay, but I want to keep the whole Shawn Mendez thing for him as Ben and Froy Gutierrez as Arthur, I love how young they are and they fit in with looks! This IS WHO WE NEED! Just thinking of them playing these roles, is making my heart jump because I REALLY WANT TO SEE IT HAPPEN!

Am I the only one that thinks Ben Platt should be Arthur? Idk why but I feel like it would work so good cuz Arthur’s a musical fan and on the first page he mentions Dear Evan Hansen, just imagine it for a second. This one song called Five Days Of Summer reminds me of when they brake up for some reason I can really see it playing as Arthur walks away...now I’m crying

Totally unrelated, but I highly recommend this LGBT manga called 'Shimanami Tasogare'. It's realistic, has fantastic artwork, and is written by an own voices mangaka.

I think Noah Galvin should be Arthur because he’s 5’6” and cute, he could put in colored contacts for the movie lol, and maybe Grant Gustin for Ben?

Okay, I didn't know who Noah Galvin was until I saw that comment, AND I AGREE HE WOULD BE PERFECT FOR ARTHUR. The other guy not so much..

For me, I would cast David Mazouz Ben. I think it would be super cool to have an actual jewish actor play him and Mazouz was super good on Gotham.

Froy is over 21 now. The movie hasn't been mentioned in a while, how old will he be when it's made? And Shawn is 21 too. These are 16 year old characters in the book.

Besides, Froy was great as Ben in the audiobook, Noah Galvin was perfect as Arthur. I can't picture Froy as Arthur.

I think if we use really famous people like Noah Centineo and Shawn Mendez, it wont make you fall in love with Ben and Arthur in the movie cuz basically everyone is in love with Noah and Shawn irl. It'll ruin the magic.

I think the two actors who did the audiobook would be perfect. If not, how about Dylan Sprayberry for Arthur and Keean Johnson for Ben?

I hate this idea so much. Noah Centineo is the most over rated and a very bad actor to have been given a chance. The look of the actor isn't what makes us fall in love with the character, the way the actor plays the character is how we fall in love. Shawn Mendez would never do something like this.

NOW...Keean Johnson as Ben would be really nice because he is an underrated actor WHO IS ACTUALLY GOOD. and so on.

Agreed. i don't get the fascination with Noah. He's another pretty face who can't act. Being able to convey the emotion on screen is going to be what makes us all love the movie the way we do the book. So I don't care if it's a big name or an unknown one as long as they can act.

i think i’m a stalker but i literally just read the book and today i found out its going on the big screens. so apparently the people who have like optioned it or whatever has created great movies, like To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. The article i was reading said it wouldn’t be surprising if it showed up on netflix. I’m not just talking about To All The Boys, i’m talking about Dumplin’, The Kissing Booth and 13 Reasons Why! Don’t get your hopes up but it might just land on netflix first!!

I don’t think Shawn would be good for it but i don’t have anybody else in mind. And now i’m thinking about it, he did audition for Simone so it could be a good chance!

okay so personally i would cast Froy Gutierrez as Ben and Noah Galvin as Arthur. i cant see Shawn Mendes or Noah Centineo as either of those roles. ig I just feel they are too well known and you wont fall in love with them or the characters while watching the movie because most people already love them... and honestly neither of them can act too well don't fight me. shawn is a singer and Noah centineo just has a pretty face and really cant act that well. please don't fight me, i am just stating my opinion

no need to fight ya, i agree 100%. while i don't know who the other guys are that you mentioned, i feel that using well known people always removes me from the plot and really connecting with characters. which is why movie adaptations might be good once and awhile but they never compare with the original book.

I agree that Froy would be great as Ben and Noah would be great as Arthur. They aren't really what I was envisioning lookswise but I think they would capture the characters well. I would love to see Jordan Doww as Hudson. I think Ansel Elgort or someone like that would be cool as Dylan.

I just (finally) finished the book and I am squealing over the movie being made!

I could not agree more with the casting of Shawn Mendes as Ben - perfection! And I'd be willing to bet he'd be a great actor.

And I had no idea who Noah Galvin was, but as soon as I saw his face... I mean, he has Arthur's eager personality written all over it!! Also perfection, and now I can't wait!!
