Better late than never!

It's time to start thinking about fun tasks for the Winter Challenge.

The bonus theme is Characters: Heroes

As in past challenges, some tasks may revolve around the seasonal theme of winter. Others may reflect the bonus theme. Other tasks may have nothing to do with either of these themes, they’re just fun ideas for unique reading challenges.

Feel free to post as many ideas as you can come up with. Don't worry about repeating what another player might have already suggested. The more ideas, the better!

The moderators will draw from these ideas as well as their own to create the 5, 10, and 15 point tasks. This thread will be open for ideas until November 15. Winter tasks will begin to be posted on November 17. We look forward to seeing what you come up with!

"unlikely hero"

Donna | 1271 comments How about:
movie heroes
literature heroes
super heroes
actors who play heroes
women heroes
kid heroes

Deborah | 1676 comments While I know that the theme isn't just for hero's of the male persuasion, the song Holding Out for a Hero just started playing in my head when I read what the Bonus Theme was.

Read a book with a word from said song that is at least four letters long.

Deborah | 1676 comments It's been done before, but every now and then it's worth repeating:)

Read a book off the Groups Bookshelf for group reads and pick one you haven't read before. If you're someone who HAS read them all, read a nominee from one of this (winter) seasons categories.

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 201 comments Manga and graphic novels often don't get much love when it comes to challenges. Read a book with MPG manga or graphic novel.

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 201 comments Heroes don't have to be human. Read a book featuring a heroic animal.

message 19: by Cordelia (new)

Cordelia (anne21) We dont often read short stories. Why not, read a book of short stories.

Where I live it is not winter. We are coming up to SUMMER. Perhaps read a book with "Summer" in the title.

Also a thought. could we avoid page numbers. I find if I read a book with a certain number of pages, I then find that Goodreads gives a different number for the same edition. I've learnt to avoid all page number tasks.

message 20: by Cordelia (new)

Cordelia (anne21) Also, I hate "tineye". I cant get it to work.

message 21: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) Cordelia- I can’t get Tin Eye to work either! I think it may be a browser problem. Mods- Is it possible to get a “work around” for those of us who can’t get it to work?

- receives a blessing.
- is trying to break a curse.
- is the subject of a prophecy.

Or maybe has to go on some kind of journey or quest?

I'll admit, I'm struggling for "hero" ideas. I did find this list: maybe the top ten could be used as a basis for the 5pt-ers - https://www.thetoptens.com/top-movie-...

I have been watching 9-1-1 and enjoying it. So maybe a book where one of the main characters is a first responder - policeman, fireman, paramedic or dispatcher?

Also, soldiers can be heroes, so what about a book with a soldier/veteran main character, or about a group of soldiers.

I know we've done a snowy cover or Christmas decorations before, but they're always a good choice for this season.

Laura | 31 comments Trish wrote: "Or maybe has to go on some kind of journey or quest?"

That could work great for a 1-2 book challenge, I think:

Book 1: Has Curse or Prophecy AND Book 2: Hero's Journey

or one book that fulfills both requirements, right?

message 27: by Lorna (new)

Zach Fellows The white helmets is a volunteer organisation that operates in parts of rebel-controlled Syria and in Turkey. Formed in 2014 during the Syrian Civil War, the majority of their activity in Syria consists of medical evacuation, urban search and rescue in response to bombing, evacuation of civilians from danger areas, and essential service delivery.
