Please post your general questions about the Winter 2018 Challenge here. Specific questions about individual tasks should be posted in the Help Threads for those tasks. You may find answers to some questions in FAQs.

Do all "genre" specific tasks HAVE to be verified before they can be used? For instance for the Mythology task (15.8) I'm planning to read The Illiad since it's on my list of Classics to read anyway. I looked it up and it is in the Mythology genre. Do I still have to get it "locked in"?

You are never required to get a genre verified. The only reason to get a genre locked in is to cover yourself in case that genre no longer appears on the main page by the time you've read the book and are ready to post the task.

i HIGHLY recommend getting them approved - i remember reading a book that had science fiction shelved like 900 times and in a GR glitch all the genres disappeared and i couldn't use it for a challenge

Can you start and count more than 1 book over 500 pages as long as you only read less than half before the winter challenge starts?

You really have 3 separate things to look at. As long as the individual title was published separately, you would look at that for the title you're using and link to that. You should also link to the omnibus edition.

If this is an ebook, then you follow the page number rules to establish length. But it doesn't matter what title shows for this.

So, if you're using Avempartha, link to the omnibus. Also link to the individual title. If you're using an ebook, you can link to the top MMPB/PB for the page length.

For The Crown Conspiracy, same. But the title is still the book you read, even if you have to link to a foreign language edition for page number.

I've re-read all of the FAQs and things and I'm still a little unclear on the ruling of 'words'. Can you please tell me how many 'words' these are?

From the FAQs:

"Essentially, a "word" in a title is a string of letters/symbols/punctuation marks with no spaces. So, a contraction is one word, as is a hyphenated word."

So, your first example has 2 words, your 2nd has 3 words, and your third has 6 words.

Could you help me with the page number for
The Count of Monte Cristo?
It is an ebook, when I select MMPB editions, the two top editions are abridged editions, then comes an arabic edition with 234 pages - it doesn't say abridged edition, but with this number of pages it can't be a full version... After it come 2 abridged versions and then comes the first unabridged version with 1451 pages.
What page number should I use?

Please use El conde de Montecristo as the edition to establish length. We'll make a note.

The FAQs say "In the Fall 2018 challenge, task 5.10 allows the use of a book with the main page genre childrens that does NOT appear at all in the AR Bookfinder or AR Bookfinder UK database. "
I couldn't find a reference to this in the Rules of the Challenge for Winter 2018. Is this no longer an allowed exception?

(Looking at Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - The Original Screenplay which has MPG Childrens when ten genres show on the book page but is not in AR Bookfinder)

Edited to add that I just found it in the task description even though not mentioned in the Childrens part of the Rules. So presumably it's OK for Winter 2018.

I also posted this under the specific task help thread yesterday. I think it may be more of a moderator question though. I need help in determining which book to link to for the paperback ARC of The Night Tiger Flatiron publication. The paperback edition hasn't been published yet but there is one listed (with a different publisher). There is one hardback (Book of the Month) that says it was published Jan 1. The hardcover that appears first on the list, though, has a future publish date. Does it matter if the publish date is in the future? Which edition do I use? It's all very confusing! Thank you!

If you are reading a print ARC there should be an isbn on the ARC. Use that isbn to determine the edition. You should identify the edition as a publisher's advance copy when you post. If the page numbers are different state the page numbers as they are in your ARC when you post.
If you were reading an ebook ARC you would identify the edition as a publisher's advance copy and follow the regular rules to determine page numbers.
