Go to the Wikipedia list of Billboard Number-One Singles. Click on the year you graduated from high school. Choose a word that is 4 letters or longer from the list of song titles for that year. Read a book with that word in the title/subtitle. Words must match exactly. No variations.

If you graduated from high school before 1940, read a book that was first published the year you graduated. If you have not graduated from high school, yet, choose the list that corresponds to your first year in high school. If you don't want to reveal your high school graduation year, you may use mine (1986).

Required: State the year you used when you post.

You're right, Gemma, it's always better to ask for clarification. And, this is just the place to do it!

In your situation, it seems like it would make the most sense to choose the year you finished your secondary studies. Or, you can use my year if you prefer. Up to you.

All the links say Happy so, assuming there's a song title that has the word "Happy" in it listed for your graduation year, it will work.

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 117 comments High school to you is what our Secondary school is? I was in Secondary school from 1986 - 1991. So I look at when I left school in 1991?

If so, can I read Dark Surrender? The song was "Coming Out of the Dark"

Rita I graduated in 1987 and there are two songs, one by Whitney Houston, I Want to Dance with Somebody Who Loves Me and I Just Can't Stop Loving You by Michael Jackson. I wanted to pick the book Land of Love and Drowning by Tiphanie Yanique Land of Love and Drowning but I wasn't sure since it wasn't exactly that word. Can you let me know if this works?
thanks!

No, sorry, the word in the title or subtitle must match the word in the song title exactly. No variations.

Nicola | 1360 comments Hi - I'm just wondering about the ruling on 'book first published'.

I 'graduated' in 1992 and looking at the list of books that were published in that year I see Terry Pratchett 'Lords and Ladies'. However the version of the book that I have was actually published in 1994 as it wasn't a first edition.

So what exactly is the ruling - is it when the book was first published OR when the book version that you have was published? And I guess if the second is the case I would need to actually provide a link to the original release and not to the one I have?

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11225 comments Nicola wrote: "Hi - I'm just wondering about the ruling on 'book first published'. "

Hi, Nicola. This task has noting to do with 'book first published' unless you graduated from high school before 1940. For this task, you need to go to the Wikipedia link in the task description (post 1 above) and click on 1992. This will give you a list of song titles that were number-one singles that year. Choose a word (4 letters or longer) from the list of song title and match it to a word in the title or subtitle of a book you want to read.

For future reference, though, when we say 'book first published' we mean the date the book was first released. So, for example, go to The Hunger Games. This link is to the paperback version of The Hunger Games. This paperback edition came out in July 1st 2010, but you'll see on the book's main page this printed in grey: (first published September 14th 2008). That date in grey is the date you would go by if the task asked for a book first published in XXXX year.

Ok thanks, not sure how I got that one confused, my book for that is On the Road linked to the 1992 song End of the Road - Boyzz to Men. Maybe I've got it messed up with another task. I'm going through them now finalizing my plan of attack :-)

CassieV I graduated in 2002, and one of the songs is "A Moment Like This". Would "like" or "this" work? I felt a little like that might be cheating, so I'll gladly pick something else if needed (and I might do that anyway).

Any word that has four or more letters will work. So "like" and "this" are fair game.

Melissa (balletbookworm) | 915 comments Since I graduated in 1996, which is unfortunately the summer of the "Macarena" and took up a stupid number of weeks on the chart, I'm using "How Do U Want It/California Love" which I actually don't remember. I had to look it up in iTunes - still didn't help.

Conveniently (for me), Edan Lepucki wrote a little book titled California.....

LOL. Well, at least you had California to work with. It seems to be a really popular book, right now. Hope you enjoy it!

In order for a book to fit this song, one of the following words must appear in the title or subtitle of the book: Can't, Help, Falling, Love.

I don't see any of those words in the title/subtitle of Getting Past Your Past: Take Control of Your Life with Self-Help Techniques from EMDR Therapy so, no, the book would not work for this task.

OK, no problem. I wasn't sure if the Help in "Self-Help" would count. I will choose another book. Thanks!
