What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Historical romance about a half indian, half white man who was arrested and locked in prison while a white woman helped him escape but he kidnapped her. His name is Ben star i think, he took her to virginia. He cut his hair. He also had a horse who he let come and go whenever it likes. There was a mountain cat incident too. The heroine was loved in her hometown i think she stayed with her aunt or uncle. I read the book about six years ago in paper back and it was quite old. The time period for the book was the old era, half of the book they were both in virginia, communication was through wiring letters. I can't remember anything about the author though.
