Maya is a typical gawky 8th grader - struggling with self-awareness and the desire to be a bit more popular. At the suggestion of her mother, she decides to follow the advice of a 50's popularity manual that her father had picked up. Maya writes her way through the school year, with many insights into friendship and the concept of popularity.

I enjoyed this very honest account of Maya's experience during her year of experimentation. The inclusion of information about her family, and what it was like to live on the Texas border with Mexico during that year add to the interest of her account.

Printz quality? Maybe an honor. What do you think?

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this. I feel it was entrusted with a really good editor, as the author hints about what a mess her notes and journal were, and what it became. I'm glad it was given a respectful treatment and was able to give her story the shine it deserves. Printz worthy? I'm not sure.

Danielle (drdspice) | 20 comments I don't know if it has the literary quality to be a Printz, but I enjoyed it and it did very well at my middle school book talks.
