Fantasy Book Club discussion

So a while ago I signed up with Tor.com's newsletter and they send you a free ebook each month. Recommended if you like free books. ;) It might be only limited to the U.S. though. As you can imagine, I've accrued quite a few of these free ebooks, and they tend to just sit on my Kindle, so I thought I might try to read some more of them for next year and probably beyond. Great reading focus idea! The Tor.com free ebooks are limited to the U.S. and Canada, I think. In any case, European readers don't have access to it :'(

I did that, too. Great stuff, but I have to be careful. I remember when Baen gave away the first Honor Harrington book of Weber's On Basilisk Station. I read it & got hooked. I wound up buying a dozen books! (They're really good. I liked them better than the Armageddon Reef series.)

There are some good titles there too. I suppose a free first book tempts you into buying the rest.

You are so right and a lot of times the free books have a little age on them or the author is "relatively" unknown so they're not selling a great deal of them anyway.

I read Killing Gravity, which is a space opera. I liked it. It was entertaining, and an easy quick read. It has exactly what I enjoy in sci-fi as well: action, cool aliens, AI, ect. It's not without its faults though. The main character while being a badass female character, I feel like she could have been switched with a male and it wouldn't have really made a difference. She's also overpowered, so any conflict she faces seems easily taken care of.

It was fun though, so I'm reading the next book.

Updated as I read The Murders of Molly Southbourne. Dark, twisted, fast paced. Loved it, and I'm already well into the sequel.

Crossing The Bloodprint off, which was actually one I won in a Goodreads giveaway rather than being from Tor's ebook club. I enjoyed this one with its more middle eastern setting. There were a lot of terms and characters to get used to, but I managed fine. It ended on quite a cliffhanger, so I'll be reading on in this series soon.

I might edit this list for next year, so it looks less crazy.

What I did with my bookshelf challenge was to stick all the unread books in a shelf rather than list them on a post. Less intimidating that way (until one looks at that shelf and face the wall of covers lol). :)

Yeah, probably a good idea. I was thinking of doing that, making a specific shelf for this challenge, so it would be easier to go through.

I read Dragon Rider: The Brindle Dragon Prequel. YA fantasy. Really tropey and formulaic, but decently entertaining. I'm not sure if I will continue on with the series though. I have so many books to read. It would really have to stand out to me, and it didn't.

I completed The Fire Within, which is an indie YA fantasy focused on elemental magic. It slightly reminded me of Harry Potter with the school setting, but it's more of an epic fantasy. I liked that the protagonist isn't all powerful, he can't use magic like everyone else. I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of the series in the future.

That does look good, I accidentally added it to my tbr.

Read A Darker Shade of Magic. This one was easy to get into. Loved this world, the magic system, and the writing. I've jumped into the next book right away.
