I loved when Daniel’s father told Reuben his reason for raising Daniel in silence. Todah rabah for allowing me (+) a window into Orthodox Judaic traditions. If Hashem wills, I’ll be learning Hebrew at school next year.

So glad you found and used this discussion, Serena❣️
That was so hard for Daniel! How did you feel about his father's decision to do that?

I consider this one of the greatest books I have ever read, and I loved it enough that I've bought copies for several friends. It was just loaded with things that were windows for me into the Orthodox Jewish Culture, but also of that time period in America as well. The whole tie-in with baseball (another passion of mine) is just delicious.
I love your comment Dave!
It is so upbeat and positive. Thank you for posting this
I also enjoyed everything about it- like when you have that "Ah Ha" moment.
Comment about "whole tie- in with baseball" .. Hmm - ok 70/30. :)

Book made a big impression on me too. I had it on audio and listened during my commute. It was one that worked well in that medium. I went to some talks/lectures about it at the time and saw segments of the movie, which seemed to hew closely to the book.

There is so much in this book, and it's sequel, "The Promise" to understand and absorb. Starting with the "Americanization" of the Jewish immigrants through a game of Baseball through the varying approaches to Orthodox Judaism from what today we would call "Modern Orthodox" to "Hassidic" through the challenges of Zionism through different Orthodox prisms, Rabbi Potok had created a masterpiece. This is not a book to be read, it should be studied!

February's Book is 'The Chosen,' by Chaim Potok.
Enjoy!
