I just finished Under the Dome last week and was less than impressed. Two chapters into this one and I’m completely terrified! What’s the difference? I think it’s the sense of claustrophobia King creates in Misery that UTD is missing (ironic since everyone is trapped under a dome).
Paul Sheldon's novel Fast Cars sounds horrible! (I love that his "quality" book just seems awful.)
Maybe King did that on purpose. after all, he's been considered a genre writer for ages, and got a lot of critical flak because of it. people always assume that he couldn't write serious literature. So maybe it was a kind of subtle dig at the critics. Unfortunately, especially at the time he was writing, there was a general tendency to look down on people who wrote genres. Things like romance, science fiction, fantasy, horror...
My copy of the book is in transit from another library, because it was checked out from my local library. It should come in by next week. I've never read the book before, so I'm excited to read it.

It's one of King's great ones I think.

One chapter done. Can not get the flick out of my head as I read. James Cain(Paul) and Cathy Bates(Annie) keep popping up in my head. Freaky! Later.
I got the book today and I'm a third of the way through. Very good writing! I can feel everything Paul is feeling. (So much that I have to put the book down for a while to recover.) This is one of King's best books, in my opinion.

I love how Paul talks about the Scheherazade complex and "the gotta" for both writers and readers. I think everyone who loves reading can relate to this.
