Use this thread to ask for help finding books to meet task requirements. Please also use this thread when asking if a book meets a task requirement. Requests for help finding books, posted in the rules and questions thread will be deleted.

Historical Novel Society is full of reviews of historical fiction novels. Reviews are broken down by genre, place, time-period, etc.

Jasmine has started a Pinterest board with books that fulfill task requirements. Books will be added to it as their are found.

I love Michelle Moran-- Nefertiti and The Heretic Queen. I also really loved Mistress of Rome by Kate Quinn for Rome.

Lindsey | 260 comments Roman Favorites: The First Man in Rome, Dictator, any of Lindsey Davis' Falco mystery series. And I agree with the suggestion of Kate Quinn's Mistress of Rome series-all fantastic!

Egyptian favorites: The Memoirs of Cleopatra, Cleopatra's Shadows and the Michelle Moran books mentioned above

Jodi (molomonkey) | 123 comments I second First Man in Rome and Memoirs of Cleopatra. Other Egyptian favorites I would say any book by Pauline Gedge. She is the gold standard for Ancient Egyptian books in my opinion.

Also Margaret George has a new Nero series out.

Jan | 1821 comments The First Man in Rome
and any or all of Colleen McCullough's 7 book series on ancient Rome are amazing reads.

I also enjoyed The Confessions of Young Nero

Are these recommendations needed for a specific task? Or just recommendations for books to read in general? If they aren't for a specific task, please use the recommendations folder:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

I don't want the challenge threads to get bogged down with lots of other information. I want participants to be able to find what they are looking for with a little bit of ease.

Thanks!

Tawallah | 104 comments Does this The Nightingale fit for biographical fiction with character as part of the resistance? Or is Schindler's List a better fit?

Based on what I've read, I would consider The Nightingale to be either a saga or literary fiction classification. Schindler's List is probably the better fit.

The Nightengale, while fantastic, is not biographical fiction.

message 12: by Tawallah (new)

Tawallah | 104 comments Thanks. Will go with Schindler’s List then.

Cindy | 167 comments Would Fever Fever by Mary Beth Keane work for Typhoid Mary for a bad reputation? Thanks

Sure.

Lindsey | 260 comments I'm stuck on Dark Alley-looking for a mystery that either has a mystery that's not murder or a mystery in which the detective works alone. Thanks!

I'm thinking any and all Kate Morton books since the mystery never really revolve around death. Also Mr. Churchill's Secretary.

message 17: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 260 comments Kate Morton's books are a good idea-thanks! I've read most but still have The Forgotten Garden on my list.

The Justin de Qunicy novels by Sharon Kay Penman would work as a "detective" who works alone. There are secondary characters but Justin primarily works on his own.

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 785 comments I loved The Weight of Ink and described it in my review as reading like a mystery. It involves two scholars figuring out the life led by a surprising seventeenth-century woman based on documents she left behind, with a dual-timeline element because we also get the seventeenth-century woman's story alternating with theirs.

message 20: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 260 comments I loved The Weight of Ink too but I've read it before this challenge unfortunately. I've only read one of the de Quincy mysteries so I'll have to see if my library has any of the others. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

Cindy | 167 comments Would a sky glowing count for Arthur Alley eg: Impossible Saints by Clarissa Harwood Thanks!

Lindsey | 260 comments I need some help since I've been stuck for awhile. I have Josephine Baker's Last Dance on hold from my library but it has been overdue for a few weeks and I'm wondering if it will ever get returned. So, I need suggestions on another rags to riches story (biographical fiction). Thanks!
