I read this book, it was about two guys I think, one of them traveled around a lot and was known as a casanova, his surname meant 'gold tongue'. I think that often in his travels he would charm his way into staying in people's houses. He got kicked out once for seducing either a wife or a daughter, not sure. I think the bubonic plague was involved. The English class in question was called 'The Hero's Journey'.

Ok, so Candide by Voltaire is an example of the hero's journey, though ambitious for grade 12. One character is named Pangloss (all tongue). I’m stretching here, but this could be your book.
If it was only two years ago, could you contact the teacher or another student who was in the class?
Sounds like "Narziss and Goldmund" by Hermann Hesse (Goldmund I think means gold mouth). That has Goldmund leaving a monastery, travelling around and becoming a ladies' man, and also involves the plague...
